Common questions

Where are the best fireworks on New Year's Eve?

Sydney Harbour, London's Thames, Dubai's Burj Khalifa and Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour have some of the largest displays. In Reykjavik the show is less organised but bigger than you would expect, as people across the city let off their own fireworks at midnight.

Where is warm on New Year's Eve?

Of the cities on this page, these have average December highs of 22°C or more: Sydney (25°C), Rio de Janeiro (28°C), Dubai (27°C), Cape Town (24°C). They are in the southern hemisphere summer or the Gulf.

Do I need tickets for New Year's Eve celebrations?

Sometimes. London's riverside viewing areas and Edinburgh's Hogmanay street party are ticketed, and tickets go months ahead. Times Square, Copacabana and the Brandenburg Gate are free to enter but fill early. Check the official event page for your city before you book flights.

When should I book a New Year's Eve trip?

Early. Hotels in the big New Year cities raise prices and set minimum stays for 31 December. Booking by September or October usually gives the best choice; flights on 30 and 31 December fill quickly too.
