Season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Highs rise from about 17°C in March to 25°C in May, with 5–9 rainy days a month. April and May are among the busiest and priciest months, and San Isidro fills the streets in mid-May.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
June averages about 30°C, July 35°C and August 34°C, with almost no rain. Afternoons are for museums and siestas; in August many locals leave and some family restaurants close, but hotels are cheaper.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
September (about 26°C) and October (about 23°C) are ideal for walking, with 8–9 rainy days. November cools to about 15°C and is quieter.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Highs of 10–14°C and lows around 0–4°C, often under clear skies. Museums are quiet, Christmas lights and the Plaza Mayor market run in December, and room rates are lower outside the holidays.
Events worth planning around
- Cabalgata de Reyes (Three Kings parade), 5 January
- San Isidro, the city's patron saint festival with free concerts, around 15 May
- Madrid Pride (MADO), late June to early July, centred on Chueca
- Christmas market on Plaza Mayor, late November to late December
When to avoid
Avoid July and the first half of August if you do not cope well with heat, as afternoons often pass 35°C. Easter week and big trade-fair dates are also crowded and expensive.
