Season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Roughly 21–22°C in March rising to about 28–29°C in May. Humid and often foggy or misty, with harbour views sometimes hidden; rain increases from April.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Around 31°C by day and 26–27°C at night, with very high humidity, frequent heavy showers and the risk of typhoons. Indoor air-conditioning is strong, so carry a layer.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
September is still hot (about 30°C) with typhoon risk; October (about 27–28°C) and November (about 24°C) are dry, clear and the most pleasant months.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Cool and mostly dry, roughly 18–20°C by day and 13–16°C at night, occasionally colder. Good for hiking; around Chinese New Year many small shops close for several days.
Events worth planning around
- Chinese New Year (late January or February), with a night parade and fireworks over Victoria Harbour
- Cheung Chau Bun Festival (April or May, around Buddha's Birthday), with a parade and the bun-tower scramble
- Dragon Boat Festival (usually June), with races at Stanley, Aberdeen and other harbours
- Mid-Autumn Festival (September or October), with lanterns in the parks and the Tai Hang fire dragon dance
- Art Basel Hong Kong, usually in March
When to avoid
Avoid June to September if you dislike heat, humidity and the risk of typhoons, which can shut the city for a day or two. The Mainland Golden Week holidays (early May and the first week of October) and Chinese New Year bring the biggest crowds and hotel prices.
