Seoul or Tokyo? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Tokyo if you want the more polished, varied city, with sushi and ramen at every level, very efficient trains and easy day trips to Hakone or Nikko. Pick Seoul if late nights, Korean barbecue, street food and palaces beside a busy modern centre matter more; its mid-range cost of about ₩190,000 a day comes in a little below Tokyo's roughly €136.

Seoul: suits solo travellers and groups of friends who want late-night food and bars, shopping and palaces in a fast, modern city.

Tokyo: suits first-timers to East Asia, couples and photographers who want outstanding food, efficient transport and a huge range of neighbourhoods.

Common questions

Is Seoul or Tokyo cheaper?

On our mid-range figures Seoul comes in a little cheaper: about ₩190,000 per person per day against about ¥24,200, roughly €136, in Tokyo. The gap is small and moves with exchange rates. Hotels are often cheaper in Seoul, while everyday meals are good value in both; a bowl of ramen in Tokyo or a stew in Seoul rarely costs much.

Which is easier for first-timers?

Tokyo, slightly. English signage on trains is excellent, Google Maps works fully, and the city handles visitors who speak no Japanese very well. Seoul is also easy, but Google Maps gives limited walking and driving directions in Korea, so download Naver Map or KakaoMap before you arrive. Both cities are very safe and card payments work almost everywhere.

When should I visit Seoul and Tokyo?

Spring and autumn are best for both. Our data puts Seoul's best months at April, May and October, and Tokyo's at November. Summer is hot and humid, with Tokyo reaching about 32°C in August and a rainy season from June into July. Seoul's winter is cold, around 1°C in January, while Tokyo stays milder at about 9°C.

Can I do Seoul and Tokyo in one week?

Yes, if you accept seeing only the highlights: three or four days in each, with a flight of about 2 h 15 between them. Book an open-jaw ticket, into one city and out of the other, so you do not waste time backtracking. Ten days is more comfortable and leaves room for a day trip from each city.
