Kyoto or Seoul? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Kyoto for temples, shrines, gardens and refined traditional food at a slower pace, ideally in October or in spring outside the cherry-blossom peak. Pick Seoul for a big modern city with palaces, nightlife until dawn, Korean barbecue and shopping. Costs are close on our numbers: about €122 a day mid-range in Kyoto against roughly ₩190,000 in Seoul.
Kyoto: suits couples, families and first-timers to Japan who want temples, gardens, traditional food and quiet evenings.
Seoul: suits solo travellers and groups of friends who want late-night food and bars, shopping and palaces in a fast, modern city.

Common questions
Is Kyoto or Seoul cheaper?
They are close on our mid-range figures: about ¥21,700, roughly €122, per person per day in Kyoto against about ₩190,000 in Seoul, which works out similar at recent exchange rates. Kyoto's hotels become very expensive in cherry-blossom and autumn-leaf seasons. Seoul's barbecue and market food, and Kyoto's set lunches, both offer good value.
How do I get from Kyoto to Seoul?
Take the train to Kansai International Airport, about 75 minutes, then fly to Seoul in about 1 h 45, landing at Incheon or Gimpo. Allow most of a day door to door. An alternative is the overnight ferry from Osaka to Busan, then a high-speed KTX train to Seoul in about 2 h 30; check current timetables before planning around it.
When is the best time to visit Kyoto and Seoul?
Autumn works best for both: our data marks October as Kyoto's top month and April, May and October for Seoul. Late March to early April brings cherry blossoms to both, but Kyoto then becomes very crowded and expensive. Summer is hot and humid, about 32°C in Kyoto in August, while Seoul's winter drops to around 1°C.
How do I avoid the crowds in Kyoto?
Start early: Fushimi Inari and the Arashiyama bamboo grove are quiet around 7 am and packed by 10. Climb higher on Fushimi Inari's trail, where crowds thin out. Visit lesser-known temples in Ohara or along the Philosopher's Path, and use the subway, trains or a bicycle rather than the overcrowded city buses.
