Berlin or Prague? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Berlin for 20th-century history, big museums, a sprawling neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood city and the stronger nightlife. Pick Prague for a compact, intact old town, castle views and hearty Czech food and beer; it is the easier city for a first short break. On our numbers costs are close: about €161 a day in Berlin against CZK 4,120, roughly €165, in Prague.

Berlin: suits solo travellers, friends, digital nomads and photographers who want Cold War history, museums, street art and late nights.

Prague: suits couples, first-timers, photographers and older travellers who want a walkable historic centre, castle and bridges.

Common questions

Is Berlin or Prague cheaper?

On our numbers they are close. Mid-range travel costs about €161 per person per day in Berlin and about CZK 4,120 in Prague, roughly €165, so Berlin is if anything marginally lower. Prague still wins on beer and set lunches away from the Old Town, while central Prague hotels in high season can cost as much as Berlin's.

How do I get from Berlin to Prague?

The train is the easiest choice: direct EuroCity services via Dresden take about 4 h 15 to 4 h 30, and the stretch along the Elbe valley is scenic. Buses take roughly 4 h 30 and are often cheaper. Flights exist but are rarely faster once airport time is added. Check current timetables, as engineering works sometimes change the schedule.

How many days do I need in each?

Berlin is spread out and needs at least three days for the main history sites, Museumsinsel and a neighbourhood like Kreuzberg; add a fourth for Potsdam. Prague's centre is compact, so three days covers the Old Town, castle district and Vyšehrad. A week split four and three, with a stop in Dresden if you like, works well.

When is the best time to visit Berlin and Prague?

June and September suit Berlin, with highs around 25°C in June; Prague is best in September, warm but quieter after summer, with July highs around 26°C. Both are cold in winter, about 4°C, though Christmas markets make December popular. For one trip covering both, September is the safest choice.
