How many days in Lefkada? 5 days, west coast beaches and the eastern islets
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
Lefkada is the Ionian island you can drive to: a short floating bridge joins it to the mainland, 20 minutes from Aktion airport. That makes it easy to reach and easy to underestimate. Give it five days. The island has two very different coasts: the west, with white limestone cliffs and open-sea beaches that get the afternoon wind, and the east, with calm bays, the yacht harbour of Nydri and a cluster of small islands. You need a car or a scooter; the mountain villages in the middle are part of the trip.
Short answer
Three days covers Lefkada town, one west-coast beach day (Porto Katsiki or Kathisma) and a boat trip from Nydri. Five days lets you add Vasiliki, the far south at Cape Lefkatas and the mountain villages of Karya and Englouvi, without spending every day in the car.

The 5-day plan, day by day
Day 1: Lefkada town, the castle and the lagoon
Morning. Stop before the bridge at the Agia Mavra castle (Santa Maura), the Venetian-Ottoman fortress that guards the entrance to the island; it is free or a few euros, and opening hours change with the season. Then walk into Lefkada town along the lagoon. The main pedestrian streets, Ioannou Mela and Dörpfeld, are lined with houses whose upper floors are clad in painted tin and timber, built that way after earthquakes.
Afternoon. See the small Archaeological Museum on the seafront (about €3), which shows finds from the excavations of Wilhelm Dörpfeld, the German archaeologist who argued that Lefkada was Homer's Ithaca. Then drive 4 km up to the Faneromeni Monastery, the island's main monastery, for the view over the town and the lagoon.
Evening. Walk out along the Gyra sand strip at the lagoon's edge, past the old windmills, to Agios Ioannis beach for sunset; it is the island's kitesurfing beach and is windy in the afternoon. Dinner back in town at a taverna in the lanes behind the main street, €15-22 per person with house wine.
The swing bridge into town opens for boats on the hour for a few minutes in summer.
Day 2: West coast: Kathisma, Agios Nikitas and Egremni
Morning. Drive 12 km to Agios Nikitas, a small fishing village of stone and timber houses with a short beach. Walk 15 minutes over the headland, or take the small taxi boat, to Milos beach, which has no road access and no buildings.
Afternoon. Spend the hot hours at Kathisma, 2 km south: a long sand-and-pebble beach with sunbeds (about €10-20 for two with umbrella) and the island's paragliding take-off from the slopes above. Continue to Egremni, a 3 km white beach below a 150-metre cliff. The long stairway was damaged in the 2015 earthquake; check locally whether it is open, otherwise reach the beach by boat from Nydri or Vasiliki.
Evening. Sunset at Kathisma or from the road above Athani, the last village before the south, where stalls sell local thyme honey. Eat in Athani or back in Agios Nikitas.
The west coast is the open Ionian: by 14:00-15:00 the wind often picks up and waves rise. Swim there in the morning and save the east coast for windy days.
Day 3: Boat day from Nydri: Meganisi and Skorpios
Morning. Drive 16 km south from town to Nydri, facing the islets of Madouri, Sparti and Skorpios. Day cruises leave around 9:30-10:00 and return about 17:30; a classic loop costs about €20-35 per person, or a private speedboat from about €150-250 for the day. You can also rent a small boat with no licence (up to 30 hp) for about €80-130 plus fuel.
Afternoon. The boats stop to swim off Skorpios, the former Onassis island (landing is not allowed), and at the Papanikolis cave on Meganisi, where, by local tradition, a Greek submarine hid in the Second World War. Meganisi has three villages: Spartochori, high above the port of Porto Spilia, Vathi and Katomeri. The car ferry from Nydri takes about 25-30 minutes if you prefer to drive there yourself.
Evening. Walk Nydri's quay at night, or drive 10 minutes to quieter Vlychos bay for fish. A kilo of fresh fish is priced by weight, typically €50-80/kg; ask before ordering.
Across the bay at Agia Kyriaki is the grave of Wilhelm Dörpfeld, and above Rachi village a 20-minute walk leads to the Dimosari waterfalls, best in spring before they run low.
Day 4: The south: Porto Katsiki, Cape Lefkatas and Vasiliki
Morning. Leave early for Porto Katsiki, about 40 km and 1 hour from town: a narrow beach under white cliffs, reached by roughly 80-100 steps from the car park (parking about €3-5). Arrive before 10:00 in July and August, when the car park fills and the road backs up.
Afternoon. Drive 15 minutes to Cape Lefkatas (Kavos tis Kyras), the southern tip, with its lighthouse on sheer white cliffs above the sea. In antiquity a temple of Apollo stood here, and legend says the poet Sappho leapt from these rocks. Then descend to Vasiliki bay, one of the best windsurfing spots in Europe, with schools renting boards from about €50-70 for two hours.
Evening. Stay for dinner on Vasiliki's harbour, where boats leave in summer for Kefalonia and Ithaca. Or drive back through Syvota, a narrow bay with fish tavernas on the water.
The wind at Vasiliki is calm in the morning and strong after midday: beginners book morning lessons, experienced windsurfers come in the afternoon.
Day 5: Mountain villages: Karya and Englouvi
Morning. Drive 15 km up to Karya, the largest mountain village, with a plane-shaded square and a small folk museum devoted to the local embroidery known as karsaniko. The road continues 4 km to Englouvi, at about 730 metres one of the highest villages in the Ionian, famous for its small lentils.
Afternoon. Drive back through Karya and take the hill road past the small village of Vafkeri, then descend to the east coast at Ligia or Nikiana for a swim on a calm pebble beach.
Evening. Back in Karya, grill houses around the square serve local salami (Lefkada salado), lamb and country salad for €15-20 per person. In August look out for the village festivals, and for the Lefkada International Folklore Festival in town, running since 1962.
Buy lentils from Englouvi, sykomaida (fig cake) and a bottle of red Vertzami, the island's own grape, as gifts.
Only have 3 days?
With 3 days, do Day 1 in the afternoon of arrival, combine Kathisma with Porto Katsiki on Day 2 (start early and skip Agios Nikitas), and take the Nydri boat on Day 3. You lose Vasiliki, Cape Lefkatas and the mountain villages.
Got extra days?
Extra days fit a ferry from Vasiliki to Kefalonia (Fiskardo, about 1 hour in summer) or Ithaca, a drive to Parga on the mainland (about 1h30), or a full day sailing to Kalamos and Kastos.
Where to stay in Lefkada
| Budget | Area | Why | Typical double/night |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Lefkada town | Rooms are cheapest here, with the bus station, restaurants and the drive to every beach. | €50-90 |
| Mid-range | Nydri / Vlychos | On the calm east coast, where the boats leave, central for both north and south. | €80-150 |
| Mid-range | Agios Nikitas | Small and walkable, close to Kathisma, with west-coast sunsets. | €90-170 |
| Comfort | Villas above Kathisma / Athani, or Syvota | Pool villas with sea views on the west; quiet harbour stays in the south. | €180-400 |
Getting around
Rent a car (about €35-60 a day in high season, more in August) or a scooter (about €20-30). The main road follows the east coast; a second road runs down the west via Agios Nikitas, Kalamitsi and Athani. Distances from town: Kathisma 14 km, Nydri 16 km, Vasiliki 38 km, Porto Katsiki about 40 km. KTEL buses connect town with Nydri, Vasiliki and Agios Nikitas several times a day in summer, fewer to the far west. The nearest airport is Aktion (Preveza), about 20 km away; a taxi costs about €35-45. KTEL coaches run to Athens Kifisos in about 5 hours.
What to eat in Lefkada
The island's flavours are simple. Look for salado, the cured pork salami of Lefkada, the small Englouvi lentils in soup or salad, and savoro, fish fried and kept in vinegar with rosemary and raisins. Fish tavernas in Syvota, Vlychos and Agios Nikitas grill bream and sea bass by weight; ask the price per kilo first. In town, try mandolato (white nougat with almonds) and pasteli from the pastry shops. A taverna meal with house wine is €15-25 per person; souvlaki in pitta is about €4. The local red is Vertzami, deep and tannic, often sold by the jug.
Best time to visit
June and September are best: sea at 23-25°C, highs of 26-30°C and room to park at the beaches. July and August are full and hot, with traffic on the bridge, the Nydri road and at Porto Katsiki, and prices peak around 15 August. The meltemi wind blows mainly in the Aegean, but the west coast here has its own strong afternoon breeze, which is why Vasiliki draws windsurfers.

Common questions
Do I need a car in Lefkada?
Practically yes. KTEL buses link Lefkada town with Nydri, Vasiliki and Agios Nikitas, but they run a few times a day and barely reach Porto Katsiki, Cape Lefkatas or the mountain villages. A small car is easiest; the roads are paved but narrow and winding in the west and the mountains. Book ahead for July and August, when rental cars run out.
Is Porto Katsiki or Egremni better?
Porto Katsiki is easier: a car park above and a stairway of about 80-100 steps. Egremni is longer and wilder, but its stairway was badly damaged in the 2015 earthquake, so ask locally whether it is open; otherwise boats from Nydri and Vasiliki stop there. Both face west and get waves in the afternoon, so go in the morning.
How do I get to Lefkada?
Fly to Aktion (Preveza) airport, about 20 km from Lefkada town, with charter and seasonal flights in summer and domestic flights from Athens. Or take a KTEL coach from Athens Kifisos station, about 5 hours. By car from Athens it is roughly 4-4.5 hours via the Rio-Antirrio bridge and the Ionia Odos motorway, with tolls of about €30-35.
Can I visit Skorpios?
No. Skorpios is private, and visitors are not allowed to land. Boat trips from Nydri pass close to it and often stop for a swim in its bays. Meganisi, by contrast, is open, with a car ferry from Nydri and three villages to walk around.
