Is Lefkada safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Lefkada is a very safe island, with very little crime against visitors. The realistic risks are driving on narrow coastal roads, strong waves on the open west coast in the afternoon, and summer heat and wildfires. Villages are safe to walk at night.
The real risks
Driving and scooters
Roads along the west coast are narrow and winding, with steep drops. Drive slowly, wear a helmet on scooters, and take care at night and on gravel.
West-coast waves
Kathisma, Egremni and Porto Katsiki face the open Ionian; by mid-afternoon the wind and waves often rise. Swim in the morning and avoid rough seas.
Rockfalls
Some beaches below cliffs, such as Egremni and Porto Katsiki, have rockfall risk after earthquakes and heavy rain. Follow signs and do not sit directly under the cliff.
Boating
Small rental boats are easy to drive, but stay within the permitted area, watch the wind and keep a safe distance from swimmers.
Wildfires and heat
In hot, dry, windy weather, follow official 112 alerts and avoid lighting fires. July highs reach about 29°C, so carry water and use sunscreen.
Areas and times to take care
All towns and villages — Lefkada town, Nydri, Agios Nikitas, Vasiliki and Syvota — are safe to walk in the evening. Nydri's busy bar strip is lively in August, but there are no areas to avoid; the main precautions concern roads and the sea.
Getting around safely
Taxis are available in Lefkada town, Nydri and from Aktion airport; agree the fare in advance. KTEL buses connect the town with Nydri, Vasiliki and Agios Nikitas several times a day in summer. Expect queues at the swing bridge into town, which opens for boats on the hour. If you hire a scooter, check the insurance and your licence category.
Solo and women travellers
Lefkada is generally very comfortable for solo women, and eating alone in tavernas or beach bars is normal. Take the usual precautions in bars late at night, such as watching your drink, and use a taxi rather than walking along unlit roads between villages.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is generally safe, but many visitors prefer bottled water because of the taste. The sun and heat are the main health issues in summer. There is a hospital in Lefkada town and health centres in larger villages; EU visitors should carry their EHIC card.
