Food tours in Lefkada: what to eat and which tour to book

Lefkada is an Ionian island joined to the mainland by a causeway and a floating bridge, and its food mixes island seafood with mountain farming. The local products to look for are the small lentils grown on the plateau around the village of Englouvi, Lefkada salami (an air-dried pork salami with garlic and pepper), honey, olive oil, and mandolato, a white nougat with almonds sold in the town. Tavernas serve the Ionian dishes found across these islands, such as savoro (fried fish in a vinegar and rosemary sauce), alongside grilled fish, souvlaki and the usual Greek salads and oven dishes. Inland villages such as Karya grill meat in the square; the harbours of Nidri, Sivota and Vasiliki do fish.
Use this page to know what to order and where on the island, with rough 2026 prices in euros. Lefkada is very seasonal: many tavernas outside Lefkada Town open roughly from May to October only. The tours shown are real GetYourGuide listings, with prices as seen when we checked; confirm the price and meeting point on the booking page before you pay.

Street food, sit-down or a cooking class?
Street food
There is no real street-food culture; the quick options are souvlaki and gyros shops, bakeries with pies (tyropita, spanakopita) and koulouri, and beach bars with snacks. In Lefkada Town you can also buy salami, cheese and mandolato for a picnic.
Sit-down meals
Most eating is in tavernas: share a few starters (lentils, salami, savoro, salads), then grilled fish or meat with house wine. Dinner starts around 20:30–21:00 in summer. Fish tavernas price fresh fish by the kilo; choose your fish and confirm the weight. Outside Lefkada Town, many places close from about late October to April.
Cooking classes
Cooking classes run in summer at a few villas, farms and village houses, typically teaching Greek and Ionian dishes such as pies, salads and savoro, with the meal and wine. Availability is limited and seasonal; check what runs during your dates.
How much to budget for food
| Style | Per person, per day* |
|---|---|
| Budget (street food, markets) | €25–35 (bakery breakfast, pita souvlaki lunch, simple taverna dinner) |
| Mid-range (one sit-down meal a day) | €50–70 (two taverna meals with house wine) |
| Splurge (tasting menus, wine) | €100+ (a fish dinner on the harbour or a modern restaurant) |
Vegetarian, halal and gluten-free
Vegetarian & vegan: Easy: lentils, Greek salad, briam (baked vegetables), gemista (stuffed tomatoes and peppers), fava, horta (greens), pies and fried courgette are common. Vegan options are fine if you avoid feta; during Orthodox fasting periods some places add 'nistisima' dishes.
Halal: Halal food is essentially unavailable. Pork is the default meat in souvlaki and gyros, so ask for chicken; fish, lamb and vegetable dishes are the practical choices.
Gluten-free: Grilled fish and meat, salads and many oven dishes are naturally gluten-free, but pita, pies and fried fish (often floured) are not. Awareness is patchy in village tavernas; say 'choris glouteni'.
Food scams and tourist traps to avoid
- Fish priced per kilo, then a large fish weighed and cooked without telling you the total. Ask to see the fish weighed and confirm the total price before it goes on the grill.
- Beach sunbeds with a minimum spend or a high price that is only mentioned when you leave. Ask the sunbed price and whether there is a minimum spend on food or drink before you sit down.
- Waterfront touts in Nidri and other harbours pulling you into tavernas with picture menus and frozen food. Compare menus, look for local dishes and fish of the day, and choose places with Greek customers.
- Bread and cover charges you did not order, or no receipt. Bread is often charged and is legal if listed on the menu; ask for it to be removed if you don't want it. You are entitled to a receipt (apodeixi).

Common questions
Do I need to tip in Lefkada?
Service is not added to the bill in most tavernas. Leaving about 5–10% or rounding up for good service is normal, and cash tips are more likely to reach staff. In cafés and souvlaki shops, small change is enough. On food or cooking experiences, a small tip for a good host is appreciated but not required.
What local products should I buy?
Englouvi lentils, Lefkada salami, local honey and olive oil, and mandolato nougat from the sweet shops in Lefkada Town. Lentils are sold in bags and keep well for travel. The salami is best bought from a butcher or deli and vacuum-packed. Check your home country's customs rules for meat if you live outside the EU.
Are restaurants open outside summer?
Lefkada Town has tavernas, cafés and bakeries open all year. Resort areas such as Nidri, Vasiliki, Agios Nikitas and Sivota are very seasonal, and many places open from roughly May to October. In April and November, check that a taverna is open before driving across the island.
How much should I budget for food per day?
On a budget, about €25–35 covers a bakery breakfast, a pita lunch and a simple taverna dinner. Two taverna meals with house wine come to roughly €50–70 per person. A fish dinner on the harbour can easily cost €50–80 per person, depending on the fish and its weight.
Where should I eat away from the beaches?
Drive up to Karya for grilled meat in the village square, or to Englouvi for lentil dishes; both are in the mountainous centre of the island and cooler in summer. In Lefkada Town, the streets behind the waterfront have older tavernas and bakeries used by people who live on the island all year.
What time do people eat?
Lunch is roughly 13:30–16:00 and dinner starts around 20:30–21:00 in summer, often later. Tavernas in resorts usually serve all day, so you can eat earlier, but local families eat late. Bakeries open early for breakfast, and souvlaki shops in Lefkada Town and Nidri stay open late.
