They are close. Our mid-range estimate is about €172 per person per day in Budapest and about 4,120 CZK in Prague, which is roughly the same at current exchange rates. In both, hotels and restaurants right in the historic centre cost the most, while eating in residential districts such as Prague's Vinohrady or Budapest's outer districts is noticeably cheaper.
How do I get from Budapest to Prague?
Direct trains run between Budapest-Keleti or Nyugati and Praha hlavní nádraží in about 6 h 30 to 7 h, passing Bratislava and Brno. Flights take about 1 h 15, but airport transfers and check-in make the total similar to a half day. Long-distance buses also run the route. Check current timetables before booking.
When is the best time to visit?
Our data puts June, July and October as the best months for Budapest and September for Prague. September is a good compromise for a combined trip. July is warmest, about 29°C in Budapest and 26°C in Prague, but also busiest. Winters are cold in both, around 4 to 5°C, with Christmas markets in December.
Which is better for a first visit to Central Europe?
Prague if you want the classic old-town experience in a small area that is easy to walk in two or three days. Budapest if you want more variety: baths, a river setting, big boulevards and stronger nightlife. Both work well for first-timers, and with a week you can comfortably do both by train.
