Is Munich safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Munich is one of the safest big cities in Europe, with very low violent crime. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in crowds, especially at Oktoberfest, the Christmas markets and the Hauptbahnhof, plus fast cyclists and the Eisbach's strong current.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Most likely at Oktoberfest, Marienplatz, the Christmas markets and on crowded S-Bahn trains. Keep valuables in front pockets.

Oktoberfest crowds

Huge crowds, strong beer and lost belongings. Drink water, keep your group together and agree a meeting point.

Bike lanes

Cyclists ride fast on marked lanes; do not walk in them.

River currents

The Eisbach and the Isar have strong currents; swim only where locals do and never in the surfing wave.

Fare inspections

Plain-clothes inspectors fine people without valid tickets about €60.

Areas and times to take care

The Altstadt, Maxvorstadt, Schwabing, Haidhausen and the English Garden are all comfortable day and night. The area around the Hauptbahnhof is busy and a little rougher late at night, though not dangerous for most visitors.

Getting around safely

The U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses are safe, clean and run late, with night lines at weekends. Taxis are metered and reliable; Uber and Bolt operate. Validate paper tickets before boarding.

Solo and women travellers

Munich is very safe for solo women. At Oktoberfest and other big drinking events, keep an eye on drinks and stay with friends; the festival has a dedicated safe point for women (Sichere Wiesn).

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe and excellent. In summer, sunburn in beer gardens and heat on day trips are the main issues. Ticks in the nearby forests and Alps can carry disease; check yourself after hikes. EU visitors should bring an EHIC or GHIC.

Emergency: 112 (ambulance, fire, general); 110 for police
