Is Munich expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Munich is the most expensive city in Germany, roughly on a par with Paris or Amsterdam for hotels but cheaper for eating and drinking. A budget day is about €110 per person, mid-range about €225 and comfort about €500. Hotels take most of the money, and prices rise steeply during Oktoberfest and trade fairs.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost: even budget hotels near the Hauptbahnhof run about €100-160 a double, the old town €170-280, plus the city tax on overnight stays, and prices can double during Oktoberfest and big trade fairs. Day trips to Neuschwanstein add train fares and timed tickets. Beer halls and beer gardens are fair value, and many museums are cheap, especially on Sundays.
When it is cheaper
January to March and November (outside trade fairs) usually have the lowest hotel prices; Oktoberfest, from mid-to-late September to early October, is by far the most expensive time.
How to spend less
- Bring your own food to the self-service areas of traditional beer gardens; it is allowed.
- Visit the state museums such as the Alte Pinakothek on Sundays, when entry is €1.
- Use the Bayern-Ticket for group day trips to Füssen and Neuschwanstein.
- Check trade-fair dates before booking; hotel prices jump during big fairs.
- Eat lunch specials in beer halls, cheaper than dinner menus.
- Stay in Maxvorstadt or near the Hauptbahnhof rather than the Altstadt.
