Is Guadalajara safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Most visitors to Guadalajara's centre, Colonia Americana, Tlaquepaque and Zapopan have no problems, and the city is lively and welcoming. However, the state of Jalisco has serious organised-crime violence, and both the UK and US governments publish detailed warnings, so read the official advice before travelling. For visitors, the realistic everyday risks are pickpocketing, taxi overcharging and nightlife-related incidents.
The real risks
Pickpocketing
Happens in crowds at Mercado San Juan de Dios, around the centre's plazas and on busy public transport. Carry only what you need and keep your phone in a front pocket.
Taxis
Unmetered taxis may overcharge visitors. Use Uber, DiDi or authorised airport taxis.
Organised crime
Violence is mainly between criminal groups and in specific areas of the state, but it can occasionally affect the city, including roadblocks. Follow official advice, check local news and avoid travelling on highways at night.
Nightlife
Drink spiking and robberies after nights out occur. Watch your drink, go out with others, and take a ride-share home.
Express kidnapping and ATM theft
Use ATMs inside banks or shopping centres during the day, and do not get into unlicensed taxis.
Areas and times to take care
The Centro Histórico, Colonia Americana, Lafayette, Providencia, Chapultepec and Tlaquepaque are the areas visitors spend time in, and they are busy into the evening. Take more care in the centre late at night, when streets empty after the shops close, and around the market after it shuts. Follow the latest official advice for the outskirts and the rest of Jalisco.
Getting around safely
Uber and DiDi are cheap and widely used, and they are the safest option at night. Mi Tren light rail is safe and useful during the day. From the airport, take a ride-share or an authorised taxi with a pre-paid ticket. Avoid long-distance road travel after dark, and use first-class buses for trips out of the city.
Solo and women travellers
Many solo women visit Guadalajara, especially Colonia Americana with its cafés and bars. Catcalling is common. Use ride-share apps at night, avoid walking alone through empty streets after dark, watch your drink, and keep to well-reviewed venues. Group tours to Tequila are an easy way to visit without driving.
Health, water and heat
Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water, which most restaurants use. Street food is generally safe at busy stands with high turnover. May is the hottest month (about 33°C highs), and the rainy season brings afternoon storms from June to September. The city is at about 1,550 metres, so the sun is strong.
