Is Guadalajara expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Guadalajara is good value — cheaper than Mexico City's trendiest districts and much cheaper than Cancún or Los Cabos. Plan on about MX$900 a day per person on a budget, MX$2,300 mid-range and MX$5,300 for comfort. Street food and transport are cheap; the Tequila day trip and modern restaurants are the main extra costs.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost, especially in Colonia Americana and Providencia, where design hotels cost MX$1,500–2,800 or more. Food is cheap at markets and stands — tortas ahogadas, birria and tacos cost very little — but modern restaurants with tequila or wine pairings cost much more. The biggest single extra is the trip to Tequila: the José Cuervo Express train is expensive, while buses and a self-guided distillery tour cost a fraction of that. City sights are cheap and several are free.
When it is cheaper
Prices are lowest outside the October festivals and the busy winter months, roughly May to September, when the rainy season begins. Hotels fill and rates rise during the International Mariachi Festival, the Fiestas de Octubre and the Guadalajara Book Fair (FIL) in late November.
How to spend less
- Take the bus from the Nueva Central Camionera to Tequila (about MX$150–200 each way) instead of the tourist train.
- Eat lunch at the fondas upstairs in Mercado San Juan de Dios for local dishes at counter prices.
- Use Uber or DiDi rather than unmetered street taxis.
- Agree a price per song with mariachis before they start playing.
- Shop for crafts at the Tonalá street market (Thursdays and Sundays), which is cheaper than Tlaquepaque.
- Order drinks at cantinas that serve free botanas (snacks) with each round.
