Is Czech Republic safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

The Czech Republic is very safe, with low violent crime. The realistic risks in Prague are pickpocketing in crowds, dishonest money exchanges and taxi overcharging; outside Prague, problems for visitors are rare.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Common on Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock and trams 22 and 9; keep bags closed and phones in front pockets.

Money exchange scams

Street kiosks advertise '0% commission' but give poor rates; use bank ATMs and decline currency conversion.

Taxi overcharging

Avoid hailing taxis in the Old Town; use ride-hailing apps or call a reputable company.

Drink-related trouble

Busy stag-party bars in central Prague can be rowdy at night; watch your drinks and bills.

Driving

The drink-driving limit is zero, and motorways need an electronic vignette.

Areas and times to take care

No districts need avoiding. Around Wenceslas Square and the main station late at night, be alert to pickpockets, touts and drunken groups; the rest of Prague and the other towns are calm.

Getting around safely

Prague's metro, trams and buses are safe and run late, with night trams. Ride-hailing apps such as Bolt and Uber work in Prague. Validate or buy tickets in the app; inspectors fine passengers without a valid ticket.

Solo and women travellers

The Czech Republic is comfortable for women travelling alone; public transport and central streets feel safe at night. Usual precautions apply in crowded nightlife areas of Prague.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink. Summers are warm rather than extreme; winters are cold, around 0°C, with icy pavements. Ticks in forests and parks can carry diseases, so check yourself after hiking.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency); 155 ambulance, 158 police, 150 fire.
