Where the money goes
Accommodation in central Prague is the largest cost, particularly in summer and December. Sightseeing tickets add up quickly in Prague (castle, Jewish Quarter, towers). Food and beer are cheap in local pubs, but the Old Town Square restaurants charge tourist prices. Trains and coaches between towns are inexpensive, especially when booked on the apps. Prague charges a local accommodation fee of about 50 Kč per person per night.
When it is cheaper
January to March and November (outside Christmas market weekends) are the cheapest months for Prague hotels; Brno, Moravia and smaller towns stay cheaper than Prague all year.
How to spend less
- Eat the weekday lunch menu (polední menu) in pubs for 180–250 Kč.
- Drink in beer halls and neighbourhood pubs rather than on Old Town Square.
- Buy a 24-hour or multi-day transport pass in the PID Lítačka app.
- Never change money at '0% commission' kiosks; use bank ATMs and always pay in koruna.
- Book train and coach tickets on the České dráhy, RegioJet or Leo Express apps for the lowest fares.
- Spend nights in Brno or Český Krumlov rather than only in Prague.
