Why visit Sucre?

Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia, located in the south-central part of the country. Its historic center of whitewashed colonial buildings is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is often called the White City. At around 2,800 meters, it has a mild climate and is lower than La Paz or Potosí.

The Casa de la Libertad, on the main square, is where Bolivia's declaration of independence was signed in 1825 and is now a museum. The Plaza 25 de Mayo is surrounded by the cathedral and other colonial buildings. The Recoleta viewpoint, beside a former Franciscan monastery, overlooks the red rooftops of the city. Outside town, Cal Orck'o has a limestone wall with thousands of dinosaur footprints, which can be viewed from the Parque Cretácico. The village of Tarabuco is known for its Sunday market and its traditional textiles. The Mercado Central is a good place to try fresh fruit juices and local food. Sucre is also known for its chocolate, sold in shops around the center, and for salteñas, baked pastries eaten in the morning.
