Why visit Salta?

Salta is the capital of Salta Province in northwestern Argentina, set in the Lerma Valley at the foot of the Andes. It is known for its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture and strong Andean traditions. The city is a good base for road trips through some of the most colourful landscapes in the country.

In the centre, the pink Cathedral and the red and gold Church of San Francisco stand near the main square, Plaza 9 de Julio. The Museum of High Altitude Archaeology (MAAM) displays Inca artefacts found on the summit of the Llullaillaco volcano. A cable car climbs Cerro San Bernardo for views over the city. South of Salta, the road through the Quebrada de las Conchas passes rock formations such as the Garganta del Diablo and the Anfiteatro on the way to Cafayate, known for its Torrontes white wine. To the north, the Quebrada de Humahuaca in Jujuy Province and the Hill of Seven Colours at Purmamarca are popular day trips. Local food includes baked empanadas saltenas, locro stew and humitas. In the evenings, folk music venues known as penas host live performances.
