Why visit Puno?

Puno is a city in southern Peru on the western shore of Lake Titicaca, close to the border with Bolivia. At around 3,800 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest cities in the country, so visitors should allow time to adjust to the altitude. It is known as the folklore capital of Peru for its music and dance traditions.

Boat trips from the port visit the Uros Islands, artificial floating islands made of totora reeds by the Uros people. Further out, Taquile Island is known for its textile art, which UNESCO recognizes as intangible cultural heritage. On Amantaní Island, visitors can stay overnight with local families. The Sillustani site, outside the city, has tall stone funerary towers called chullpas on a peninsula above Lake Umayo. In town, the Plaza de Armas is anchored by the stone cathedral. Every February, the Festival of the Virgen de la Candelaria fills the streets with costumed dancers and bands. Lake trout and dishes made with quinoa are common on local menus.
