Why visit Uyuni?

Uyuni is a small high-altitude town in the Potosí Department of southwestern Bolivia. It is the main gateway to the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world. Most visitors use the town as a base for guided jeep tours across the salt flat and the remote Altiplano to the south.

Start at the Train Cemetery on the edge of town, where rusting locomotives from the early railway era lie in the desert. In the village of Colchani you can see how salt is harvested and processed by hand. Out on the salt flat, Isla Incahuasi rises from the white crust and is covered in tall columnar cacti. During the rainy season a thin layer of water can turn the flat into a vast natural mirror. Multi-day tours continue south into the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve, with stops at Laguna Colorada and its flamingos, the Sol de Manana geyser field and Laguna Verde below Licancabur volcano. Local meals often feature quinoa and llama meat. Nights are very cold at this altitude, so warm layers are essential.
