Why visit Huacachina?

Huacachina is a small desert oasis in southern Peru, just outside the city of Ica. A green lagoon fringed with palm trees sits in the middle of some of the tallest sand dunes in the region. The village is small and walkable, built around the lagoon.

The most popular activity is a dune buggy ride across the desert, usually combined with sandboarding down the steep slopes. Tours often time the ride so visitors can watch the sunset from the top of the dunes. Visitors can also walk up the dunes near the village for views over the oasis. The Ica valley is the heart of Peru's pisco and wine production, and many bodegas offer tours and tastings. The Paracas National Reserve and boat trips to the Ballestas Islands, home to sea lions and seabirds, are a common day trip. Flights over the Nazca Lines can be arranged from Ica or Nazca further south. Local sweets include tejas, filled confections from Ica.
