Why visit Arequipa?

Arequipa is the second-largest city in Peru, located in the south of the country at the foot of the Andes. It is called the White City because many of its colonial buildings are made of sillar, a pale volcanic stone. Three volcanoes, El Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu, rise above the city.

The historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is built around the Plaza de Armas and its large cathedral. The Santa Catalina Monastery is a walled complex of colorful streets, cloisters and cells that functions like a small town within the city. The Museo Santuarios Andinos displays Juanita, the frozen remains of an Inca girl found on Mount Ampato. The Yanahuara district has a viewpoint with arches framing El Misti. Many visitors make a trip to the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world, to watch Andean condors in flight. Arequipa's traditional restaurants, called picanterías, serve dishes such as rocoto relleno and adobo arequipeño. Queso helado, a local frozen dessert, is sold around the city.
