Why visit Pienza?

Pienza is a small hill town in the Val d'Orcia in southern Tuscany, remodelled in the 15th century by Pope Pius II, born here as Enea Silvio Piccolomini, into what he hoped would be an ideal Renaissance town. The work of the architect Bernardo Rossellino, its centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Piazza Pio II gathers the cathedral, the Palazzo Piccolomini with its hanging garden and the Palazzo Comunale in a perfectly planned square. Lanes with romantic names such as Via dell'Amore and Via del Bacio lead to the town walls, from where the view sweeps over the rolling Val d'Orcia, itself a UNESCO landscape of cypress avenues and farmhouses. Pienza is known throughout Pienza for its pecorino, and cheese shops line the main street. Nearby are the chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta, Bagno Vignoni's thermal square, Montepulciano and Montalcino, making Pienza one of the best bases for a Tuscan countryside stay.
