Sicily rewards the road tripper with sun-drenched coastlines, UNESCO World Heritage temples, and some of Italy's most soulful street food. Seven days behind the wheel unlocks hidden hilltop towns, volcanic landscapes, and turquoise coves that tour buses never reach.

Your day-by-day plan

Day1
Palermo

Arrive in Palermo

Morning: Pick up your rental car at Falcone–Borsellino Airport and check into your hotel in the historic center.

Afternoon: Wander the chaotic and colorful Ballarò street market, sampling arancini, panelle, and fresh sfincione.

Evening: Stroll the Teatro Massimo area and enjoy dinner at a traditional trattoria with pasta con le sarde.

💡 Book your rental car well in advance in summer — availability drops fast and prices spike.
Day2
Palermo

Palermo's Baroque Gems

Morning: Visit the Palatine Chapel inside the Norman Palace and admire its breathtaking 12th-century Byzantine mosaics.

Afternoon: Drive 30 minutes to the hilltop village of Monreale to see the stunning cathedral and its golden mosaics.

Evening: Return to Palermo and explore the Vucciria neighborhood for an aperitivo and fresh seafood dinner.

💡 The Palatine Chapel gets crowded — arrive right at opening time (9am) to have it nearly to yourself.
Day3
Trapani

West Coast to Trapani

Morning: Head west along the coast, stopping at the ancient salt pans and windmills of the Stagnone lagoon near Marsala.

Afternoon: Continue to Erice, a medieval hilltop town with sweeping views over the sea and excellent almond pastries.

Evening: Descend to Trapani for dinner at a harbor-front restaurant specializing in couscous di pesce, a local specialty.

💡 The salt pans are most photogenic at sunset — time your Trapani arrival to catch the orange glow over the windmills.
Day4
Agrigento

San Vito Lo Capo & Drive South

Morning: Make a morning stop at San Vito Lo Capo for a swim in its postcard-perfect turquoise bay and white sand beach.

Afternoon: Drive southeast across the island toward Agrigento, stopping for a roadside lunch of local bread and cheese.

Evening: Check in near Agrigento and enjoy a relaxed dinner in the town's lively historic center.

💡 The drive from Trapani to Agrigento is about 2.5 hours — factor in the San Vito detour and leave by 9am.
Day5
Piazza Armerina

Temples & Roman Mosaics

Morning: Explore the Valle dei Templi at opening time — the Greek temples of Concord and Hera are genuinely awe-inspiring.

Afternoon: Drive north to Piazza Armerina and visit Villa Romana del Casale to see its extraordinary 3rd-century Roman mosaics.

Evening: Settle in for dinner in Piazza Armerina's charming baroque old town and try pasta al ragù di maiale.

💡 Valle dei Templi covers a large area — wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially in warm months.
Day6
Catania

Baroque South & Mount Etna

Morning: Drive to Noto, one of Sicily's finest baroque towns, and walk the golden limestone Via Corrado Nicolaci.

Afternoon: Continue to Ragusa Ibla for a late lunch and a wander through its dramatic terraced baroque streets.

Evening: Drive up to Catania, have dinner near the lively Piazza del Duomo, and admire the elephant fountain at night.

💡 Noto and Ragusa Ibla are only 45 minutes apart — both are worth at least 90 minutes each on foot.
Day7
Catania

Etna & Departure

Morning: Make an early drive up Mount Etna — take the cable car and a guided 4x4 excursion to the summit craters.

Afternoon: Return the rental car in Catania and grab a final granita al limone and brioche at a classic bar.

Evening: Depart from Catania Fontanarossa Airport with a suitcase full of cannoli, capers, and Sicilian wine.

💡 Book the Etna summit excursion the night before — morning slots sell out quickly, especially on weekends.
