Why visit Bellagio?

Bellagio sits at the tip of the promontory where Lake Como splits into its two southern arms, which is why it is often called the pearl of the lake. Its steep stone stairways, known as salite, climb from the waterfront past silk shops, cafés and small hotels to the old church of San Giacomo.

The great draws are the gardens. Villa Melzi has lakeside paths, a Japanese-style pond and fine views, and Villa Serbelloni's park on the headland can be visited on guided tours. Across the water, a short ferry ride away, are Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, famous for its spring azaleas and rhododendrons, and Villa del Balbianello, the much-photographed villa on a wooded point near Lenno. Ferries also link Bellagio with Varenna and Menaggio, making it the best hub for a lake-hopping day. Eat lake fish such as missoltino and risotto with perch fillets, and take an evening walk along the lakefront when the day-trippers have gone.
