Why visit Paraty?

Paraty is a colonial town on the Costa Verde of Rio de Janeiro state, roughly halfway between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. It grew in the colonial era as a port for shipping gold from Minas Gerais. Together with Ilha Grande, it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for both culture and biodiversity.

The car-free historic centre has whitewashed houses with colourful doors and uneven stone streets that sometimes flood at high tide. The Church of Santa Rita, on the waterfront, is the town's most photographed building. A short walk away, the Forte Defensor Perpetuo overlooks the bay. Traditional wooden schooners take day trips to islands and quiet beaches in the bay, with stops for swimming and snorkelling. South of town, Trindade has wild beaches and the natural pool of Cachadaco. The forested Serra da Bocaina National Park rises behind Paraty and has many waterfalls. The area is known for its cachaca, and several local distilleries welcome visitors. Each year the town hosts FLIP, an international literary festival.
