Why visit Bonito?

Bonito is a small town in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in west-central Brazil, close to the Serra da Bodoquena. It is one of Brazil's best-known ecotourism destinations, famous for rivers with exceptionally clear water. Most attractions are on private land, visitor numbers are limited, and tours are booked in advance through local agencies.

The signature activity is floating with a snorkel down spring-fed rivers such as the Rio da Prata and the Rio Sucuri, surrounded by schools of fish. The Gruta do Lago Azul is a large cave with a deep blue lake at the bottom, lit by sunlight at certain times of day. At the Abismo Anhumas, visitors abseil into a cavern and can snorkel or dive in its underground lake. In nearby Jardim, the Buraco das Araras is a huge sinkhole where red-and-green macaws nest. Boca da Onca has a long forest trail with a series of waterfalls. The Balneario Municipal is a simple riverside spot for swimming among fish. Local cooking features river fish such as pacu, and terere, a cold herbal mate, is a regional drink.
