Why visit Fortaleza?

Fortaleza is the capital of Ceara state, on the Atlantic coast of northeastern Brazil. It is one of the largest cities in the country and has warm, sunny weather for most of the year. Long urban beaches, constant trade winds and easy access to dunes and fishing villages make it a major holiday base.

The Beira-Mar seafront promenade is the centre of city life, with a busy evening craft fair and views of the fishing boats. Praia do Futuro, east of the centre, is lined with large beach restaurants serving fresh seafood. The Dragao do Mar Center of Art and Culture, near Praia de Iracema, has museums, a planetarium and lively bars around it. The Mercado Central is packed with stalls selling lace, hammocks and cashew nuts. Other landmarks include the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Theatro José de Alencar, with its ornate iron structure. West of the city, Cumbuco is known for kitesurfing and buggy rides over the dunes. Further along the coast, Canoa Quebrada has red cliffs above the beach. Local food includes tapioca pancakes, baiao de dois and crab, and forro music is played across the city.
