Why visit Fernando de Noronha?

Fernando de Noronha is a volcanic archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean off the northeast coast of Brazil, administered by the state of Pernambuco. Most of the islands and surrounding waters are a marine national park and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitor numbers are controlled and every visitor pays an environmental preservation fee.

Baia do Sancho, reached by steps and ladders through a crack in the cliffs, is often ranked among the best beaches in Brazil. Next to it, Baia dos Porcos looks out on the twin peaks of Morro Dois Irmaos. From a viewpoint above Baia dos Golfinhos you can watch spinner dolphins in the early morning. At low tide, the natural pool at Praia da Atalaia is excellent for snorkelling with reef fish, and access is limited to protect it. The clear, warm water also makes Noronha one of Brazil's top diving areas, with sea turtles, rays and reef sharks. In Vila dos Remedios, the main village, you can visit the ruins of the Forte de Nossa Senhora dos Remedios. Sunset at Praia do Boldro is a daily ritual for many visitors. In the southern summer, Cacimba do Padre beach draws surfers when large swells arrive.
