How many days in Samos? 5 days, from Pythagoras' harbour to the Seitani coves

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

Samos lies so close to Turkey that from the south coast you can see the houses on the other side, little more than 1.5 km away at the narrowest strait. It is a green, mountainous island of about 470 square kilometres, birthplace of Pythagoras and famous for its sweet Muscat wine. Give it five days with a car. The ancient sites cluster in the southeast around Pythagorio, the beaches and wine villages along the north coast, and the wildest walks in the west under Mount Kerkis, which rises to 1,434 metres straight from the sea.

Short answer

5 days is the sweet spot3 days is the minimum worth it

Three days covers Pythagorio, the Heraion, Vathy and Kokkari. Five days adds the mountain villages, the Potami waterfall and the walk to the Seitani coves, which most visitors never reach.

The 5-day plan, day by day

Day 1: Pythagorio and the Tunnel of Eupalinos

Morning. Book a slot for the Tunnel of Eupalinos, an aqueduct 1,036 metres long dug through a mountain from both ends in the 6th century BC, and a masterpiece of ancient engineering. Visits are in small groups and short sections (ticket roughly €10-12; check current access). Then walk the walls of Pythagorio to the Logothetis castle above the harbour.

Afternoon. See the Archaeological Museum of Pythagorio (a few euros), with statues and finds from the ancient city. Swim at Potokaki beach, a few minutes west of town.

Evening. Walk the harbour past the modern statue of Pythagoras, then dinner by the water, €18-28 per person.

Pythagorio and the Heraion together are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit the tunnel early in the day, when it is quieter.

Day 2: The Heraion and the south coast

Morning. Drive 6 km west to the Heraion, the sanctuary of Hera, one of the largest temples of the ancient Greek world. A single column still stands, at about half its original height. Entry is a few euros; allow 1.5 hours.

Afternoon. Drive east to Psili Ammos, a sandy beach facing the Turkish coast, with shallow water for children. Or take the road to Mykali, a long pebble beach nearby.

Evening. Stay in the south for dinner in Ireo, the village next to the Heraion, with fish tavernas by the sea.

Psili Ammos is very shallow and warm. In strong north wind it stays calm, unlike the north coast.

Day 3: Vathy, Kokkari and the wine villages

Morning. Start in Vathy (Samos town), the capital at the head of a deep bay. The Archaeological Museum has a 5-metre kouros, the largest surviving Archaic statue of its kind (about €4-6). Then visit the Samos Wine Museum at the cooperative's old winery in Malagari, which explains the Muscat wine.

Afternoon. Drive 10 km west to Kokkari, a former fishing village on a small headland, with beaches either side. Swim at Lemonakia or Tsamadou, two pine-backed coves 2-3 km further west.

Evening. Drive up to Manolates or Vourliotes, mountain villages above Kokkari, with stone houses, plane trees and tavernas. Order local wine and goat in red wine sauce, €15-25 per person.

Kokkari is known for windsurfing; the north wind picks up in the afternoon. Swim in the morning.

Day 4: Karlovasi, Potami and the Seitani coves

Morning. Drive about 33 km to Karlovasi, the island's second town, with old tanneries by the sea. Continue 2 km to Potami beach, then walk 15-20 minutes up the river to the Potami waterfalls, where you swim through a narrow gorge to reach the falls.

Afternoon. Walk the coastal path from Potami to Mikro Seitani (about 1 hour) and Megalo Seitani (about 1h30-2h), two wild beaches in a protected area for the Mediterranean monk seal. There are no facilities or roads.

Evening. Return to Karlovasi and eat at a taverna on the harbour, then drive back east or stay the night in the west.

The Seitani path is rocky with no shade. Carry at least 2 litres of water, and start by 9:00 in summer.

Day 5: Marathokampos and Mount Kerkis

Morning. Drive to the southwest, to Marathokampos and the long beach of Votsalakia below Mount Kerkis. Walk up to the Cave of Pythagoras, where the philosopher is said to have hidden from the tyrant Polycrates, about 30-45 minutes on a trail from the road.

Afternoon. Strong walkers can climb towards the summit of Kerkis from the monastery of Evangelistria, about 3-4 hours up, steep and rocky. Others can swim at Limnionas, a quieter bay with tavernas.

Evening. Have dinner in Ormos Marathokampou, the harbour of Marathokampos, then drive back to your base.

Buy Samos Muscat wine, honey and olive oil from the villages. The Samos Vin Doux is the classic.

Only have 3 days?

With 3 days, do Pythagorio and the Heraion on Day 1, Vathy and Kokkari on Day 2, and Potami on Day 3. You lose the walks and the southwest.

Got extra days?

Extra days fit a ferry to Patmos (about 2 hours from Pythagorio in summer), Ikaria or Fourni, or a day trip to Kusadasi in Turkey for Ephesus (about 1h30 by ferry; passports needed; check current timetables).

Getting around

A car is easiest (about €30-50 a day in summer); the coast roads are good and the mountain roads narrow. From Vathy: Kokkari 10 km, Pythagorio 13 km, Karlovasi 33 km, Marathokampos about 45 km. KTEL buses link Vathy with Pythagorio, Kokkari and Karlovasi several times a day. Samos airport is near Pythagorio, with flights from Athens in about 50 minutes. Ferries to Piraeus take roughly 8-11 hours depending on the route, and from Vathy, Karlovasi and Pythagorio to Ikaria, Fourni, Patmos and the Dodecanese. Check current timetables.

What to eat in Samos

Samos is a wine island: its sweet Muscat, from terraced vineyards in the north, has been exported for centuries. Taverna food is simple and good: grilled fish and octopus by the sea, goat or rooster cooked in red wine in the mountain villages, wild greens and local cheese. Try the island's honey and olive oil, and look for pies filled with greens. A meal with wine costs €15-25 per person, a little more in Pythagorio. Fish is priced by weight; ask first.

Best time to visit

May, June and September are best: highs of 25-30°C, green mountains in spring and warm sea. July and August are hot, and the north coast gets the meltemi wind in the afternoons. August brings local festivals in the villages. Many hotels close from November to April, but Vathy stays open.

Common questions

Can I visit the Tunnel of Eupalinos?

Yes, in small groups and timed slots, but only part of the tunnel's 1,036 metres is open, and access has changed over the years. Some visits are shorter and suitable for everyone; others go deeper and need comfort in narrow spaces. Check the current access and book on site or online.

Can I visit Ephesus from Samos?

Yes. Ferries run from Vathy or Pythagorio to Kusadasi in Turkey, about 1h30, mostly in summer. From Kusadasi, Ephesus is about 20 minutes by car. You need a passport and, depending on your nationality, a visa or e-visa. Many agencies sell day trips.

Do I need a car in Samos?

It helps. Buses link the main towns, but not the mountain villages, the Seitani path start or the southwest beaches. A small car lets you do one area per day. Driving times are short in the east and longer in the west.

Which are the best beaches in Samos?

Lemonakia and Tsamadou near Kokkari for pines and clear water, Psili Ammos in the southeast for sand and calm sea, Potami near Karlovasi for the waterfall walk, the Seitani coves for wild nature, and Votsalakia in the southwest for a long beach below Mount Kerkis.
