Is Samos expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Samos is good value for a Greek island, clearly cheaper than the Cyclades and similar to other large North Aegean islands. A budget traveller needs about €65 a day, mid-range about €130 and comfort about €260 per person, assuming a shared car. Rooms and the car take most of the money; tavernas and sights are fairly priced.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost, from €40–70 in Vathy to €150–300 at resort hotels around Pythagorio or Kokkari, plus Greece's per-room, per-night climate resilience fee. A car helps for the mountain villages, the west and the southwest beaches. Ferries from Piraeus (roughly 8–11 hours) or flights from Athens are a separate expense. Food is fair value, a little higher in Pythagorio; fish is priced by weight.
When it is cheaper
May, June and September are cheaper than late July and August, often noticeably for rooms and cars. Many hotels close from November to April, though Vathy stays open.
How to spend less
- Stay in Vathy for the cheapest rooms and bus connections.
- Use KTEL buses between Vathy, Pythagorio, Kokkari and Karlovasi; rent a car only for the mountains and the west.
- Eat in the mountain villages, such as Manolates and Vourliotes, rather than on the Pythagorio harbour.
- Ask the price per kilo before ordering fish.
- Buy Muscat wine, honey and olive oil directly in the villages.
- Swim at free beaches like Lemonakia, Tsamadou and Psili Ammos instead of renting sunbeds.
