Is Samos safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Samos is a very safe island with little crime. The realistic risks are natural: heat and lack of shade on walks such as the Seitani path, afternoon north wind on the north coast, and narrow mountain roads. Theft is not a concern for most visitors.
The real risks
Hot walks
The Seitani coastal path is rocky with no shade or facilities; carry at least 2 litres of water and start by 9:00 in summer.
North wind
In July and August the meltemi picks up in the afternoon on the north coast around Kokkari; swim in the morning or go to Psili Ammos in the south.
Mountain roads
Roads to Manolates, Vourliotes and Mount Kerkis are narrow; drive slowly.
Mount Kerkis
The climb from Evangelistria is steep and rocky, about 3–4 hours up; only for experienced walkers.
Potami gorge
Reaching the waterfalls means swimming through a narrow gorge; check conditions and wear water shoes.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. Take care on remote paths in the west, on cliff edges and on unlit roads at night.
Getting around safely
KTEL buses link the main towns several times a day. Taxis are available in the towns; agree the fare or ask your hotel. If driving, the coast roads are good but mountain roads are narrow.
Solo and women travellers
Samos is very comfortable for women travelling alone. Normal precautions apply; tell someone your route before long walks.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is not generally recommended for drinking; buy bottled or ask your host. Summer heat reaches about 33–34°C. There is a hospital in Vathy; travel insurance is still important.
