How many days in Nafpaktos? 3 days for the Venetian harbour, the castle and the coast

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

Nafpaktos is a seaside town on the north shore of the Gulf of Corinth, a few kilometres from the Rio-Antirrio bridge. Its emblem is a tiny walled harbour under a castle whose walls zigzag down the hill to the water. Most Greeks know it as a weekend escape; foreign visitors know it as Lepanto, the name of the 1571 sea battle fought at the mouth of the gulf. Give it three days: one for the town, one west to the bridge and Mesolongi, one east along the coast or up into the mountains.

Short answer

3 days is the sweet spot2 days is the minimum worth it

Two days covers the harbour, the castle and the beaches, plus a half-day at the bridge. Three adds a full excursion to Galaxidi or the mountain villages.

The 3-day plan, day by day

Day 1: The harbour, the castle and Psani

Morning. Climb to the castle above the town early, about 30-40 minutes on foot from the harbour by stepped lanes, or drive most of the way up. The walls run in several rings down to the sea; from the top you see the whole gulf and the bridge to the west. Check current opening hours, which are shorter in winter.

Afternoon. Walk down to the Venetian harbour, a small round port closed by two towers, with plane trees and cafés around it. The statue of Miguel de Cervantes, who was wounded in the Battle of Lepanto, stands on the harbour wall. Nearby, the stone Botsaris Tower hosts exhibitions on the town's history (check opening times).

Evening. Swim or stroll at Psani, the long pebble beach on the western side of town with a seafront promenade, then eat at the cafés and tavernas around the harbour, where mains cost about €12-18.

The harbour cafés are busiest on Friday and Saturday evenings, when people drive in from Patras and Athens. Come early or on a weekday for a table on the water.

Day 2: The Rio-Antirrio bridge and Mesolongi

Morning. Drive 10-15 minutes west to Antirrio for the Charilaos Trikoupis bridge, the cable-stayed bridge of about 2.9 km opened in 2004 that crosses the gulf to Rio near Patras. Below it stands the small Antirrio castle on the shore, a good viewpoint for photos.

Afternoon. Continue about 40-45 minutes west to Mesolongi, the lagoon town known for its siege in the War of Independence and for Lord Byron, who died there in 1824. Visit the Garden of Heroes (free), with its memorials, then drive out along the lagoon causeway towards Tourlida for the salt pans and stilt fishing huts.

Evening. Eat grilled fish or eel in Mesolongi, a lagoon speciality, or try avgotaracho, the local cured mullet roe, expensive at about €100 or more per kilo, so order a small portion. Drive back to Nafpaktos (about 45 minutes).

The bridge toll for a car is roughly €14 each way (check current price). You do not need to cross it unless you continue to Patras.

Day 3: Galaxidi or the mountains of Nafpaktia

Morning. Option one: drive about 1 hour east along the coast to Galaxidi, an old seafaring town of stone captains' houses around two harbours, with a small Nautical Museum (a few euros; check opening hours).

Afternoon. On the way back, stop at the village of Glyfada for the small boat to Trizonia, the only inhabited island in the Gulf of Corinth, car-free and a few minutes across, with tavernas by its little harbour. Check the boat times before you go.

Evening. Back in Nafpaktos, take a last walk along the harbour walls when the towers are lit, and eat fried small fish and salads at a taverna by Psani or Gribovo for about €15-20 per person.

Option two for the whole day: drive inland about 40-60 minutes into the green mountains of Nafpaktia for fir forests, stone villages such as Ano Chora and grilled meat in a village taverna. The roads are narrow and slow and may have snow from November to March; ask locally first.

Only have 2 days?

With 2 days, do Day 1 as written and spend the second morning at the bridge and Antirrio castle, then swim at Gribovo beach east of town. You lose Mesolongi and Galaxidi.

Got extra days?

A 4th day can go to Delphi, about 1.5 hours east via Itea, for the sanctuary of Apollo and its museum, or across the bridge to Patras for its Roman odeon and old town (about 30 minutes).

Getting around

The town is walkable: the harbour to Psani is about 10 minutes, to Gribovo about 15. For the excursions you need a car. From Athens it is about 2.5-3 hours by the motorway via Corinth and the bridge, or KTEL buses from the Kifissos terminal in about 3 hours. From Patras it is about 30 minutes by car over the bridge. The nearest airport with international flights in summer is Araxos, west of Patras, about 1.5 hours away; Athens airport is about 3 hours by road.

What to eat in Nafpaktos

Nafpaktos eats from the gulf: grilled sardines, red mullet and fried squid in the harbour tavernas, about €12-20 a main. From the mountains come grilled lamb and goat, trout from river farms and local cheeses. In Mesolongi, look for eel and the prized avgotaracho. Coffee culture is strong; a freddo espresso at the harbour costs about €3-4. A full taverna dinner with house wine is €15-25 per person.

Best time to visit

May to June and September to early October, with highs of 24-30°C and a warm sea. July and August are hot and busy at weekends, and the beaches fill with families. Winter is mild on the coast, about 12-15°C, and the town stays alive because it is a year-round local destination; the mountains can see snow.

Common questions

Is Nafpaktos worth visiting?

Yes, as a short stay or a stop on the drive between Athens and western Greece. The Venetian harbour and castle walls are among the most attractive in mainland Greece, the beaches are in town, and it is less touristy than island towns. It combines easily with Delphi, Galaxidi and Mesolongi.

What was the Battle of Lepanto?

Lepanto was the Italian name for Nafpaktos. In October 1571, a fleet of the Holy League led by Spain and Venice defeated the Ottoman fleet in a great galley battle at the entrance of the gulf. Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote, fought there and was wounded, which is why his statue stands on the harbour wall.

Are the beaches in Nafpaktos good?

They are town beaches of pebbles and clear water, best for a quick swim. Psani, on the western side, has a long promenade with cafés; Gribovo, on the eastern side, is a bit calmer. Both have sunbeds in summer. For quieter coves, drive east along the coast towards Monastiraki and Glyfada.

Can I do Nafpaktos as a day trip from Athens?

It is possible but long, with about 5-6 hours of driving there and back. It works better as an overnight stop, or combined with Delphi on a two-day loop: Athens to Delphi, then down to Itea and Galaxidi, along the coast to Nafpaktos, and back to Athens over the bridge and the motorway.
