Is Nafpaktos safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Nafpaktos is a very safe, family-oriented town, and crime against visitors is rare. The realistic concerns are summer heat, traffic on the coastal road and busy weekend evenings at the harbour. Most visitors have no problems at all.
The real risks
Heat
July can reach about 35°C on average. Climb to the castle early, carry water and wear a hat.
Road traffic
The coastal road and the motorway can be busy on weekends. Drive carefully on mountain roads into Nafpaktia, which are narrow and slow and can have snow in winter.
Steep lanes
The stepped lanes up to the castle are uneven. Wear good shoes, especially after dark.
Petty theft
Rare, but do not leave bags unattended on the beach or valuables visible in a parked car.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas of concern in Nafpaktos. The harbour, the old town, Psani and Gribovo are lively and fine to walk in the evening, including late on summer weekends.
Getting around safely
The town is walkable. Taxis are available and can be called by phone. KTEL buses connect Nafpaktos with Athens and Patras. If you drive into the mountains in winter, ask locally about snow before setting out.
Solo and women travellers
Nafpaktos is comfortable for solo women. Families and groups of friends fill the harbour cafés in the evening, and eating alone is normal. Usual common-sense precautions are enough.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is generally safe, though many people prefer bottled water; ask your host. Sun protection and water are essential in summer. There is a health centre in town, with larger hospitals in Patras.
