How many days in Ljubljana? 3 days with Lake Bled and the Škocjan Caves
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
Ljubljana is one of Europe's smallest and greenest capitals, with a car-free old centre along the Ljubljanica river, shaped by the architect Jože Plečnik. One day is enough for the city itself, but it is also the perfect base for Slovenia: Lake Bled is under an hour away and the karst caves of Škocjan and Postojna about an hour. Three days combines a city day with two day trips, all by bus, train or tour.
Short answer
Two days covers Ljubljana and Lake Bled. The third adds the caves, which are some of the most spectacular in Europe.

The 3-day plan, day by day
Day 1: Ljubljana's old town and castle
Morning. Start at Prešeren Square and cross Plečnik's Triple Bridge, then walk along the river to his Central Market colonnades (morning market Monday to Saturday) and the Dragon Bridge, guarded by four bronze dragons, the city's symbol.
Afternoon. Take the funicular (about €5-6 return) or walk 15 minutes up to Ljubljana Castle, with its tower view over the red roofs and, on clear days, the Julian Alps. Then visit the Cathedral of St Nicholas with its bronze doors and the Cobblers' Bridge.
Evening. Have dinner along the river, then a drink in Metelkova, an alternative cultural centre in former army barracks covered in street art, or at the riverside bars of Trnovo.
On Fridays from about March to October, Odprta kuhna (Open Kitchen) fills the Pogačar Square next to the market with food stalls from Slovenian chefs.
Day 2: Lake Bled and Vintgar Gorge
Morning. Take the bus to Bled (about 1h15, hourly). Walk or rent a bike around the lake (6 km), then take a pletna, a traditional wooden boat (about €18-20 per person, return), to the island church, where you ring the wishing bell.
Afternoon. Climb to Bled Castle (about €17-20) on its cliff above the lake, or walk 20 minutes up to the Ojstrica or Osojnica viewpoints for the classic view of the island. Nearby, Vintgar Gorge has 1.6 km of wooden walkways above a turquoise river (ticket and seasonal timed entry; shuttle or bus from Bled).
Evening. Try the original Bled cream cake (kremšnita) at the Park Hotel's café, then return to Ljubljana by bus.
With a full day, continue 30 minutes to Lake Bohinj in the Triglav National Park, larger, wilder and quieter than Bled.
Day 3: Škocjan or Postojna Caves
Morning. Visit the Škocjan Caves (UNESCO, about €25-30, guided tours), with an underground canyon of the Reka river, 146 metres deep in places, crossed by a bridge 45 metres above the water. It is about 1 hour south of Ljubljana by train to Divača and a short shuttle.
Afternoon. Or visit Postojna Cave (about €35-40), where an electric train takes you 3.7 km into the cave, with a walk among stalactites and the 'human fish' (olm). Nearby, Predjama Castle is built into a cliff at the mouth of a cave.
Evening. Return to Ljubljana for a last dinner on the river.
The caves are about 10-12°C all year: bring a jacket even in summer.
Only have 2 days?
With 2 days, do Day 1 and Day 2. You lose the caves.
Got extra days?
With more time, drive the Vršič Pass through the Julian Alps to the emerald Soča Valley for rafting and hiking, or visit the Venetian coastal town of Piran on the Adriatic (about 1.5-2 hours).

Common questions
Is Ljubljana worth more than one day?
The city itself can be seen in a day, but as a base for Bled, the caves and the Alps, three or four days work very well.
Škocjan or Postojna?
Škocjan for the dramatic underground canyon and a more natural experience; Postojna for the train ride, easier access and Predjama Castle. Both are excellent.
Do I need a car in Slovenia?
Not for Ljubljana, Bled and the caves, which are reachable by bus, train or tour. A car helps for the Soča Valley and the Vršič Pass.
Is Lake Bled crowded?
Yes in July and August, especially around midday. Go early, or stay overnight in Bled or Bohinj.
Is Ljubljana expensive?
Moderate: cheaper than Vienna or Venice, a little pricier than Zagreb. Weekday lunch menus are good value.
Can I swim in Lake Bled?
Yes, in summer at the public swimming areas on the lake shore, such as the grassy western end near the camping ground and the Grajsko kopališče lido below the castle. The water reaches about 22-25°C in July and August.
Who was Jože Plečnik?
Slovenia's most important architect (1872-1957), who redesigned Ljubljana's centre between the wars: the Triple Bridge, the Central Market, the National and University Library and the riverside embankments. His works in Ljubljana are on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and his house in Trnovo is a museum.
Is Ljubljana good for families?
Yes: the car-free centre, the castle funicular, the Tivoli park and easy day trips to Bled and the caves suit children of all ages.
