Is Ljubljana safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Ljubljana is one of Europe's safest capitals, with very low crime and a calm, car-free centre. The realistic risks are occasional pickpocketing in crowds, bike collisions on shared paths, and hiking or weather hazards on day trips to the Alps.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Rare, but possible at the Christmas market, the Central Market and on crowded buses to Bled. Keep bags closed.

Cyclists

Bikes are everywhere, including on pavements; look before stepping onto cycle lanes.

Mountain hazards

Weather changes quickly in the Julian Alps; check forecasts, carry layers and stay on marked trails.

River and lake swimming

Lakes Bled and Bohinj are cold and deep away from the shore; swim in designated areas.

Winter ice and fog

Pavements can be icy and fog dense in winter; take care, especially on cobbles.

Cave temperatures

Postojna and Škocjan are about 10–12°C year-round; bring a jacket and wear shoes with grip on the wet paths.

Areas and times to take care

No areas of Ljubljana are particularly risky for visitors. Metelkova, the alternative cultural centre, is lively at night and generally fine, though it can be rowdy late on weekends; keep an eye on your belongings there and around the main station after midnight.

Getting around safely

City buses are safe and reliable; pay with the Urbana card or app. Taxis are generally honest; use reputable companies or ride-hailing apps where available, and confirm the price for airport trips. Intercity buses and trains are safe.

Solo and women travellers

Ljubljana is very comfortable for solo women, with low crime and an easy-going atmosphere. Normal city precautions apply late at night, and the city is very walkable after dark.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe and of high quality. Ticks carrying tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease are present in forests and meadows from spring to autumn; use repellent and check after hikes. EU visitors should bring a European Health Insurance Card (UK visitors a GHIC); everyone should have travel insurance.

Emergency: 112 for ambulance and fire; 113 for police.
