Is Ljubljana expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Ljubljana is mid-priced for Europe: cheaper than Vienna, Munich or Venice, but noticeably dearer than Zagreb, Budapest or Bratislava. A budget day is about €90 per person and a mid-range day about €180; accommodation in the small old town is the main cost.

Where the money goes
Rooms are the biggest share: hostels near the station and Metelkova cost about €70–110 for a private double (dorms less), old-town hotels €120–200 and riverside boutique hotels €200–400, plus a small tourist tax. Day trips are the second big cost: Bled's boat and castle, Vintgar Gorge and the Postojna or Škocjan caves each cost €20–40. Eating is moderate, especially at lunch menus and the Friday Open Kitchen. Transport costs little in the walkable, car-free centre.
When it is cheaper
From November to March (outside the December market weeks), hotel rates are usually lower, often by roughly 20–30%; weekdays tend to be cheaper than weekends year-round.
How to spend less
- Eat the daily lunch menu (dnevno kosilo), which is much cheaper than dinner.
- Walk up to the castle instead of taking the funicular, and enjoy the free grounds.
- Take the bus to Bled rather than a tour; it runs about hourly and takes about 1h15.
- Choose between Postojna and Škocjan rather than paying for both.
- Use the Bicikelj bike-share for short rides around the city.
- Refill bottles at public drinking fountains; Ljubljana's tap water is excellent.
