How many days on Koh Phangan? 4 days of beaches, waterfalls and Ang Thong

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

Koh Phangan is known for the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin, but that is one beach on one night a month. The rest of the island is jungle hills, waterfalls, quiet bays on the north coast and yoga schools around Sri Thanu. Plan four days: one around the west coast and Thong Sala, one in the north, one on the east coast, and one on a boat to Ang Thong Marine Park. If you want the party, check the lunar calendar and book a room well ahead.

Short answer

4 days is the sweet spot3 days is the minimum worth it

Three days covers the west and north coasts and Ang Thong. With four, you add Thong Nai Pan and the waterfalls on the east side, or simply more beach time.

The 4-day plan, day by day

Day 1: Thong Sala, the west coast and sunset

Morning. Arrive at Thong Sala pier, the island's main town. Rent a scooter (about 200-300 baht a day) only if you are an experienced rider; otherwise use taxis or songthaews. Drive about 15 minutes north to Haad Yao, a long sandy beach with calm water, for a swim.

Afternoon. Continue to Haad Salad, a smaller bay with good snorkelling on the reef in front, then to Sri Thanu, the yoga village, where you can join a drop-in class (roughly 300-500 baht). Zen Beach nearby is a rocky, quieter spot.

Evening. Watch sunset from the west coast, then head back to Thong Sala. Its night food market, about 10 minutes' walk from the pier, sells pad thai, grilled seafood and mango sticky rice from 50-100 baht a dish; on Saturday evenings there is also a larger walking-street market.

Many visitors are injured on scooters on Koh Phangan's steep, sandy roads. Wear a helmet, check that your travel insurance covers riding, and photograph the bike before renting.

Day 2: Koh Ma, Chaloklum and Bottle Beach

Morning. Go to Mae Haad on the north-west coast, where a sandbar at low tide links the beach to the small island of Koh Ma. The reef around it is one of the best snorkelling spots on the island; bring your own mask or rent one for about 100 baht.

Afternoon. Drive 10 minutes to Chaloklum, a fishing village, and take a longtail boat to Bottle Beach (Haad Khuad), roughly 300-400 baht per person each way, depending on numbers. The beach sits in a deep bay backed by jungle, with only a few bungalows and no road access for cars.

Evening. Return to Chaloklum for seafood at a village restaurant, about 200-400 baht for a meal. The north coast is quiet at night, with few bars.

Check the tides before visiting Koh Ma: the sandbar is only walkable at low tide. Wear reef shoes and do not stand on the coral.

Day 3: Ang Thong National Marine Park

Morning. Join a day trip by speedboat or larger boat to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park, a group of more than 40 limestone islands west of the island. Boats usually leave around 8:00-9:00; prices are roughly 1,800-2,500 baht including lunch and snorkelling, plus a park entrance fee of about 300 baht for foreigners.

Afternoon. Most trips stop at Koh Mae Ko, where a short steep walk leads to a viewpoint over Thale Nai, an emerald saltwater lake inside the island, and at Koh Wua Talab, where a harder climb (about 40-60 minutes round trip) reaches a view across the archipelago. Many trips also include kayaking among the islands.

Evening. Back on Koh Phangan by late afternoon. Have a Thai massage (about 300-400 baht an hour) and an early dinner near your hotel.

The park sometimes closes or limits trips in rough weather, especially from November to December. Choose a boat with a shaded deck and bring sunscreen, water and shoes for the climbs.

Day 4: Waterfalls and Thong Nai Pan

Morning. Visit Phaeng waterfall in the island's national park, a short walk from the car park, then continue up the trail (about 20-30 minutes, steep) to the Domsila viewpoint. Then drive to the east coast for Than Sadet waterfall, where several Thai kings visited and left inscriptions on the rocks.

Afternoon. Spend the afternoon at Thong Nai Pan Noi, a curved bay with fine sand and clear water in the north-east; neighbouring Thong Nai Pan Yai is quieter. The road there is paved but steep with tight bends, so drive carefully or take a taxi (expect 500-700 baht one way from Thong Sala).

Evening. Have dinner on Thong Nai Pan Noi's beach road. If it is Full Moon week, head to Haad Rin for the party on Sunrise Beach, where an entrance fee of roughly 100-200 baht is charged; otherwise enjoy the calmer bars by the bay.

At Haad Rin, bring only a small amount of cash, wear shoes (there is broken glass), avoid buckets of spirits, and do not swim at night. Buy only sealed drinks.

Only have 3 days?

With 3 days, keep the west coast, the north with Bottle Beach, and Ang Thong. If you prefer to stay on land, swap Ang Thong for the waterfalls and Thong Nai Pan.

Got extra days?

A 5th day can be spent climbing Khao Ra, the island's highest hill, with a local guide, or diving from Koh Phangan to Sail Rock, a pinnacle between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Koh Tao is about 1-1.5 hours by fast ferry, and Koh Samui about 30-60 minutes.

Getting around

Ferries arrive at Thong Sala from Koh Samui (about 30-60 minutes, roughly 300-400 baht), Koh Tao (about 1-1.5 hours) and Donsak on the mainland (about 2.5-3 hours by car ferry), with combined bus-boat tickets from Surat Thani airport. The nearest airport is Koh Samui. On the island, shared songthaew pickups and taxis charge per person or per ride; fares to Haad Rin from Thong Sala are about 150-300 baht per person. Scooters are cheap but dangerous for beginners. Longtail boats link Chaloklum with Bottle Beach and Haad Rin with some eastern beaches.

What to eat in Koh Phangan

Thong Sala's night market is the best place for cheap Thai food: pad krapow (holy basil stir-fry), som tam (green papaya salad), khao man gai (chicken rice) and grilled squid, at 50-120 baht a plate. Beach restaurants serve fresh fish by weight, massaman and green curries for 150-300 baht. Sri Thanu is known for vegan and raw-food cafes. Thai beer costs about 70-100 baht in a shop and 100-150 baht in a bar. Tap water is not drinkable; refill stations sell filtered water for a few baht.

Best time to visit

January to April is the driest and calmest period on the Gulf of Thailand side, with highs around 30-33°C. May to September is usually fine too, often with sunny days and short showers. The wettest months are October to December, when storms can disrupt ferries. Full Moon Parties take place every month around the full moon, with smaller Half Moon and Jungle parties in between; rooms near Haad Rin fill up days before.

Common questions

When is the Full Moon Party?

It takes place once a month on Haad Rin's Sunrise Beach, usually on the night of the full moon, but the date moves when it clashes with Buddhist holidays. Check the official schedule before booking. Expect thousands of people, loud music until morning and an entrance fee. Rooms within walking distance often need a minimum stay of several nights.

Is Koh Phangan only for parties?

No. Haad Rin is the party area, but most of the island is quiet, with families, yoga students and long-stay visitors. Beaches such as Haad Yao, Thong Nai Pan and Bottle Beach are relaxed, and many travellers come for meditation, diving and hiking. Even during Full Moon week, the north and west are calm.

Should I rent a scooter on Koh Phangan?

Only if you already ride confidently. Roads are steep, sandy and often wet, and accidents are common among visitors. You need a valid licence and a helmet, and insurance may not cover you otherwise. Taxis and songthaews are a safer alternative; for longer trips, hiring a driver for half a day can make sense.

How do I combine Koh Phangan with Koh Samui and Koh Tao?

The three islands are linked by frequent ferries. Many travellers fly into Koh Samui, take a 30-60 minute boat to Koh Phangan, then continue to Koh Tao for diving. Book combined tickets in high season, and allow a buffer day before an international flight in case rough seas cancel boats.
