Free things to do
- Swimming at Haad Yao, a long sandy beach with calm water
- Walking across the sandbar to Koh Ma at low tide and snorkelling the reef
- Sunset from the west coast beaches
- Zen Beach near Sri Thanu
- Phaeng waterfall, a short walk from the car park (check for a small park fee)
- Browsing the Thong Sala night market and the Saturday walking-street market
Cheap eats
- Pad krapow (holy basil stir-fry) at the night market — about ฿50–100
- Som tam (green papaya salad) — about ฿50–80
- Khao man gai (chicken rice) — about ฿50–80
- Mango sticky rice — about ฿60–100
- Grilled squid or seafood skewers at Thong Sala market — from about ฿50
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in hostels and bungalows in Thong Sala, near the pier and the night market, or in Haad Rin for parties, at about ฿500–1,000 a night. Sri Thanu has simple rooms near the yoga schools. Book well ahead for Full Moon week.
Getting around cheaply
Use shared songthaews and taxis, roughly ฿150–300 per person from Thong Sala to Haad Rin. From Koh Samui, the ferry takes about 30–60 minutes for roughly ฿300–400. From the mainland, combined bus-boat tickets from Surat Thani are cheaper than flying into Samui.

More ways to save
- Drink beer bought from shops rather than in bars.
- Choose one paid trip, such as Ang Thong Marine Park, and spend other days on free beaches.
- Stay longer in one place; many bungalows give lower rates for weekly stays.
- Travel in the shoulder months, roughly May to September, for lower room prices.
- Take a drop-in yoga class rather than a full retreat if you just want a taste.
- Use filtered-water refill stations instead of buying bottled water.
