Is Koh Phangan safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Koh Phangan is generally safe and relaxed, and most visitors have no serious problems. The real risks are scooter accidents on steep roads, the Full Moon Party (drugs, spiked drinks, drunken accidents and theft), and the sea in rough weather. Thailand has very strict drug laws, and penalties are severe.
The real risks
Scooter accidents
Roads are steep, sandy and often wet, and many visitors are injured. Ride only if you are experienced, wear a helmet, carry a valid licence and check your insurance; otherwise use taxis.
Full Moon Party
Expect huge crowds at Haad Rin. Carry little cash, wear shoes, buy only sealed drinks, avoid buckets of spirits and do not swim at night.
Drugs
Thai drug laws are very strict, and police checks happen around the parties. Do not buy or carry drugs.
Sea and weather
Strong currents and rough seas are common from October to December. Swim where locals swim and avoid swimming after drinking.
Scooter rental disputes
Photograph the bike before renting, and do not leave your passport as a deposit if you can avoid it.
Areas and times to take care
Most of the island — the west coast, Sri Thanu, the north and Thong Nai Pan — is quiet and relaxed. Haad Rin is the area that needs most care, especially on Sunrise Beach during and after the parties, when theft, fights and accidents are more common. Unlit roads at night are risky for scooters and walkers.
Getting around safely
Shared songthaews and taxis are the safest way to get around; agree the price before setting off. Longtail boats link Chaloklum with Bottle Beach and Haad Rin with some eastern beaches. Allow a buffer day before an international flight, as rough seas can cancel ferries, especially from October to December.
Solo and women travellers
Koh Phangan is popular with solo women, especially in Sri Thanu and on the yoga and wellness scene. Use extra care at the parties: stay with friends, watch your drink and arrange transport home. Avoid walking or riding alone on dark, empty roads late at night.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is not drinkable; use refill stations or bottled water. Protect yourself from sun and heat, and from mosquitoes, as dengue fever occurs in Thailand. Coral cuts get infected easily, so wear reef shoes. Serious cases are often taken to hospitals on Koh Samui, so good travel insurance is essential.
