Is Koh Phangan expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Koh Phangan is cheap by Western standards and usually cheaper than neighbouring Koh Samui, though island prices are higher than mainland Thailand. Expect about ฿1,200 a day per person on a tight budget, about ฿2,900 mid-range and ฿6,500 or more for comfort. Rooms, boat trips and taxis take most of the money; street food is very cheap.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost: hostels and bungalows in Haad Rin and Thong Sala cost about ฿500–1,000 a night, good-value resorts on Haad Yao or Haad Salad ฿1,500–3,000, and luxury villas at Thong Nai Pan or Bottle Beach ฿5,000–15,000. Getting around is the next expense, because taxis and songthaews charge per person and the island is hilly, so trips to the east coast can cost ฿500–700 one way. Boat trips such as Ang Thong Marine Park add ฿2,000 or more. Food is cheap if you eat at markets and local restaurants, but drinks, Western food and Full Moon week push costs up.
When it is cheaper
Prices are often lower from about May to September and in the wetter months of October to December, outside the Christmas and New Year peak. Rooms near Haad Rin can double during Full Moon week, often with minimum stays.
How to spend less
- Eat at the Thong Sala night market, where most dishes cost ฿50–120.
- Avoid Haad Rin during Full Moon week unless you are going to the party; stay elsewhere and take a taxi in.
- Book Samui, Phangan and Tao ferries as combined tickets in high season.
- Share taxis and songthaews with other travellers to split per-ride fares.
- Bring your own snorkel and mask instead of renting one each day.
- Refill water bottles at filtered-water stations for a few baht rather than buying plastic bottles.
