How many days in Folegandros? 4 days on the cliff-top Chora and the boat-only beaches

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

Folegandros is a narrow, dry island of about 32 square kilometres between Milos and Santorini, with one of the most striking villages in the Cyclades: Chora, built along the edge of a 200-metre cliff. There are no big hotels and no airport, and the best beaches are reached on foot or by boat. Give it four days. Spend the mornings walking, the afternoons at a cove, and every evening in Chora's squares, which is what the island does best.

Short answer

4 days is the sweet spot3 days is the minimum worth it

Three days covers Chora, the Panagia walk, Katergo and Ano Meria. Four days adds the round-island boat to Chrysospilia and a long walk down to Agios Georgios, without rushing either.

The 4-day plan, day by day

Day 1: Chora, the Kastro and the Panagia path

Morning. Arrive at Karavostasis, the port, and take the bus or a taxi 3 km up to Chora. Walk its chain of squares, Dounavi, Kontarini, Piatsa and Pounta, shaded by trees and lined with tavernas. Enter the Kastro, the 13th-century Venetian quarter where the outer houses form the wall, with whitewashed wooden balconies over narrow lanes.

Afternoon. Take a slow lunch, then swim at Karavostasis beach or at Vitsentzou and Latinaki, small coves a 10-15 minute walk from the port.

Evening. Walk up the zigzag path from Chora to the church of Panagia, about 15-20 minutes, for sunset over the cliff and the sea. Come back down for dinner in the squares, where most people eat around 21:30-22:00. A meal with wine is €18-30 per person.

The Panagia path is steep and unlit. Bring a phone torch for the descent, and do not walk it in flip-flops.

Day 2: Katergo and Livadi

Morning. Take the small boat from Karavostasis to Katergo (roughly 10-15 minutes, about €10-15 return, several times a day in summer). Katergo is a pebble beach with very clear water and a rock islet, with no facilities. You can also walk there from Livadi in about 45 minutes on a rough path.

Afternoon. Return to the port for lunch, then walk 20 minutes along the coast to Livadi bay, where the island's campsite stands. Swim and rest in the shade of the tamarisk trees.

Evening. Back in Chora, have a drink at a bar at the edge of the cliff, then try matsata, the island's handmade pasta, served with rooster or rabbit in tomato sauce.

Bring water and food to Katergo. Check the time of the last boat back; on windy days it may not run.

Day 3: Ano Meria and Agios Georgios

Morning. Take the bus 5 km to Ano Meria, the farming village that stretches along the island's spine for about 4 km of scattered houses, threshing floors and stone walls. Visit the small Folklore Museum (a few euros, opening varies), set in an old farmhouse with tools and household objects.

Afternoon. From the last bus stop at Ano Meria, walk down to Agios Georgios bay in the north, about 45-60 minutes on a stony path. The beach has no facilities. Alternatively, walk or take the short trail down to Ambeli or Livadaki on the same side.

Evening. Climb back up and eat in one of the tavernas of Ano Meria, which serve their own bread, cheese and meat. Return to Chora by the last bus or a booked taxi.

The walk back up from Agios Georgios is the hard part. Start the descent by 10:00 in summer and carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person.

Day 4: Round-island boat: Chrysospilia, Agali and Agios Nikolaos

Morning. Join a round-island boat, often leaving around 10:00 from Karavostasis or Agali (about €40-60 per person with lunch). The boat stops below the Chrysospilia, the Golden Cave on the north coast, where ancient inscriptions and stalactites were found; it is only reachable from the sea and visits depend on the weather.

Afternoon. Most boats stop to swim in coves on the west coast. If you stay on land instead, take the bus to Agali and walk 15-20 minutes along the coastal path to Agios Nikolaos, a beach with a taverna above it.

Evening. Last evening in Chora. Order kalasouna, the local cheese pie, and buy souroto, the soft local goat's cheese, or a jar of thyme honey to take home.

In meltemi weather the north coast is rough and boats cancel. Keep this day flexible and swap it with Day 2 if needed.

Only have 3 days?

With 3 days, do Chora and Panagia on Day 1, Katergo on Day 2 and Ano Meria with Agios Georgios on Day 3. You lose the boat round the island and Agali.

Got extra days?

Extra days fit Sikinos, the quieter neighbour, about 20-40 minutes by boat, or onward ferries to Santorini (about 1-1.5 hours by fast boat), Milos and Ios. A longer stay is also a chance to walk the old paths to the southern capes.

Getting around

Island buses link Karavostasis, Chora, Ano Meria and Agali in summer, usually timed with ferries and running every 30-60 minutes; fares are about €2. Taxis are very few, so book ahead. A scooter or quad (€25-40 a day) helps for Ano Meria and the west. Small boats run from the port to Katergo and other beaches. Ferries connect Piraeus in about 4-7 hours depending on the vessel and route, plus Santorini, Milos, Sifnos, Sikinos and Ios. There is no airport; check current timetables.

What to eat in Folegandros

Folegandros cooking is island farm food. Matsata, thick handmade noodles with rooster, rabbit or goat in tomato sauce, is the dish to order. Kalasouna is a cheese pie with onions and souroto; souroto itself is a soft, slightly sour goat's cheese. Look for local thyme honey, capers and sun-dried tomatoes. Fish is often expensive because the island has few boats; ask the price per kilo. A taverna meal with wine costs €18-30 per person, and the squares of Chora have the best choice.

Best time to visit

Late May, June and September are best: highs of 24-28°C, warm water, open boats. July and August bring the meltemi and many more visitors, though still far fewer than Santorini. October is still swimmable, but boats and buses thin out, and most hotels close from November to April.

Common questions

Is Folegandros a good day trip from Santorini?

Some boats run day trips, but the island's strength is its evenings in Chora, which a day trip misses. Stay at least two nights, ideally three or four. Ferries between Santorini and Folegandros take about 1-1.5 hours on fast boats in summer.

Do I need a car in Folegandros?

No. The buses connect the port, Chora, Ano Meria and Agali, and boats reach Katergo. The best beaches involve walking anyway. A scooter or quad is useful for flexibility, but driving in Chora itself is restricted and parking is at the edges.

Which are the best beaches in Folegandros?

Katergo, by boat or on foot from Livadi, is the best known. Agios Nikolaos and Agali are easier, with tavernas. Agios Georgios in the north and Livadaki are for walkers. Most beaches are pebble or coarse sand, and few have shade or sunbeds, so bring an umbrella and water.

Is Folegandros expensive?

Rooms in Chora are pricey in July and August because the supply is small. Food is moderate, about €18-30 per person for dinner. Budget travellers stay at the port or the Livadi campsite and come up to Chora by bus for the evening.
