Is Folegandros safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Folegandros is a very safe, small island with very little crime. The realistic risks are natural: steep unlit paths, long hot walks to beaches without facilities, and strong meltemi winds that cancel boats. Theft is not a concern for most visitors.
The real risks
Steep paths
The zigzag path to the Panagia church is steep and unlit; bring a phone torch for the descent and do not walk it in flip-flops.
Hot walks
The climb back up from Agios Georgios is hard; start the descent by 10:00 in summer and carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person.
Meltemi wind
In July and August the north coast gets rough, and round-island boats and the Katergo boat may cancel.
No facilities
Katergo, Agios Georgios and Livadaki have no shade or shops; bring an umbrella, water and food.
Scooters and quads
Roads are narrow; ride slowly and wear a helmet. Driving in Chora itself is restricted.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. Take care on the cliff edge around Chora and the Panagia path at night, and on stony trails to the northern beaches.
Getting around safely
Taxis are very few, so book ahead, especially for early or late ferries. Buses link Karavostasis, Chora, Ano Meria and Agali in summer, usually every 30–60 minutes. Keep travel plans flexible in strong wind.
Solo and women travellers
Folegandros is very comfortable for women travelling alone. Tell someone your route before walking to remote beaches and carry a charged phone.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is not generally recommended for drinking; buy bottled water. Sun is strong and shade scarce. There is only basic medical care on the island; serious cases go to larger islands or Athens, so travel insurance is important.
