How many days in Barbados? 4 days: calm west, wild east, rum and a fish fry
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
Barbados is about 34 km long, yet its coasts feel like different islands: the calm, turquoise Platinum Coast on the west, the lively south coast around St Lawrence Gap, and the Atlantic-battered east coast at Bathsheba. Four days lets you swim with turtles, see Bridgetown's UNESCO-listed old town, drive the hilly parishes inland and be at Oistins for the Friday night fish fry. The cheap blue buses reach almost everywhere.
Short answer
Three days covers Bridgetown, one snorkel trip and the east coast. Four days adds the northern plantations, Harrison's Cave and a slower beach day. Many visitors stay a week, mostly for the beaches.

The 4-day plan, day by day
Day 1: Bridgetown and Carlisle Bay
Morning. Walk Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the neo-Gothic Parliament Buildings (with a small museum), National Heroes Square and the swing bridge over the Careenage. Then visit the Nidhe Israel Synagogue, rebuilt in 1833 on a 1654 site, with its excavated mikveh.
Afternoon. Swim at Carlisle Bay, a 10-minute walk south of the centre. Snorkel trips (about Bds$100-160) visit six shallow shipwrecks in the marine park, where turtles often feed. Brownes Beach is the free public stretch.
Evening. Go out in St Lawrence Gap, the south-coast strip of bars and restaurants, 15 minutes by bus. Dinner costs Bds$60-120; a rum punch about Bds$15-20.
Beaches in Barbados are all public up to the high-water mark, even in front of luxury hotels, so you can walk onto any of them.
Day 2: Harrison's Cave and the east coast
Morning. Take the electric tram tour through Harrison's Cave in the central parish of St Thomas, with stalactites, pools and an underground waterfall (about Bds$70-90; book a morning slot). Then visit Hunte's Gardens, a tropical garden in a sinkhole created by the horticulturist Anthony Hunte.
Afternoon. Drive down to Bathsheba on the Atlantic coast, where the huge mushroom-shaped rocks stand in the surf. The Soup Bowl here is a famous surf break. Swim only in the shallow rock pools at low tide, as currents are dangerous. Then see Andromeda Botanic Gardens on the cliff above.
Evening. Watch the evening light at Cattlewash beach, then return west. Stop at a rum shop for a Banks beer (about Bds$5) and fish cakes on the way.
The east coast is 45-60 minutes by car from the west coast, and the roads are narrow and winding. Driving is on the left.
Day 3: The north: St Nicholas Abbey and Animal Flower Cave
Morning. Head north to St Nicholas Abbey, a Jacobean plantation house from 1658, one of only three of its kind in the Americas. Entry with a rum tasting is roughly Bds$80-100, and the heritage railway runs a short steam-train loop to Cherry Tree Hill.
Afternoon. Visit the Animal Flower Cave at North Point (about Bds$30-40), a sea cave with pools where you can swim at calm times. Then drive back down the west coast to Speightstown, the island's second town, for a walk along its old wooden storefronts.
Evening. Eat in Holetown, where the first English settlers landed in 1627. Limegrove and First Street have restaurants for every budget, from Bds$40 for fish and chips to Bds$250 for fine dining.
Visit the Mount Gay Visitor Centre near Bridgetown on another day for a rum history tour; the brand has records back to 1703.
Day 4: Beaches of the south and the Oistins fish fry
Morning. Spend the morning at Crane Beach on the south-east, with pink-tinged sand under a cliff; access is by a public path or through the hotel's steps. Continue to Bottom Bay, a small cove with palms and a cliff path down.
Afternoon. Swim at Miami Beach (Enterton) near Oistins, with a calm side and a wave side. Or snorkel at Folkestone Marine Reserve on the west coast, which has an underwater trail and the Stavronikita wreck farther out for divers.
Evening. Go to Oistins Fish Fry on Friday night (also busy on Saturday): grilled flying fish, marlin and dolphin fish (mahi-mahi) with macaroni pie for Bds$30-45 a plate, then music and dancing until late.
If you are not on the island on a Friday, Oistins still serves food nightly, but the full party is Friday.
Only have 3 days?
With 3 days, combine Bridgetown with a Carlisle Bay snorkel, do Harrison's Cave and Bathsheba, and end at Oistins. You lose the northern plantations.
Got extra days?
Extra days suit a catamaran cruise along the west coast with turtle swims, a cricket match at Kensington Oval in season, a hike with the free Sunday Barbados National Trust Hikes, or a day at Gun Hill Signal Station and Sunbury Plantation House. Grenadine island day trips run by small plane from the airport.
Where to stay in Barbados

| Mid-range | Holetown / Speightstown | Calm west-coast beaches, good for swimming and turtles. | Bds$500-900 |

Getting around
Barbados has three bus types: the blue government buses, yellow private buses and white ZR vans with maroon stripes, all for the same flat fare of about Bds$3.50 (exact change preferred). The main terminals are in Bridgetown at Fairchild Street (south) and Princess Alice (north). Taxis are unmetered: agree the fare first, about Bds$60-80 from the airport to the west coast. Car hire costs Bds$120-180 a day and needs a local driving permit, issued by the rental company.
What to eat in Barbados
Bajan food is Caribbean with British habits. The national dish is cou-cou and flying fish, cornmeal and okra with steamed fish in gravy. Try fish cakes with bakes, macaroni pie, pudding and souse (pickled pork with sweet potato) on Saturdays, and a cutter (a sandwich in salt bread) at beach bars, about Bds$10-20. Rum is everywhere: Mount Gay, Foursquare and St Nicholas Abbey. Rum shops serve a small bottle with mixers for Bds$20-30. Dinner on the west coast costs two to three times more than on the south coast.
Best time to visit
December to April is the dry season, 27-30°C with trade winds, and the most expensive. May and June are cheaper and mostly dry. The hurricane season runs from June to November; the island is east of most storm paths, but rain and occasional storms happen, with September and October the wettest months. Crop Over, the summer festival, peaks with Grand Kadooment in early August.

Common questions
Can I use US dollars in Barbados?
Yes. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere at the fixed rate of Bds$2 to US$1, though change usually comes in Barbados dollars. Cards work in hotels and restaurants, but buses, rum shops and fish fry stalls are cash only, so carry some local notes.
Where is the best snorkelling?
Carlisle Bay for the shallow wrecks and turtles, Folkestone Marine Reserve near Holetown for a marked underwater trail, and the west coast off Paynes Bay for turtles. The west coast is calmest in the mornings. Avoid swimming on the east coast, where currents are strong.
Is it easy to drive in Barbados?
Manageable but tiring: driving is on the left, roads are narrow, signposting is patchy and roundabouts are frequent. The interior of St Thomas and St Andrew is hilly. Many visitors hire a car for one or two days and use the buses and taxis the rest of the time.
When is the Oistins Fish Fry?
Every night food stalls open at Oistins Bay Gardens, but the famous party is Friday night, with music, dancing and the biggest crowds; Saturday is also busy. Arrive by 19:00 for a table, and go to the stalls with the longest local queues.
