Is Barbados expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Barbados is expensive by Caribbean standards, especially on the west-coast Platinum Coast, where five-star resorts cost Bds$1,400-3,000 a night. On a budget expect about Bds$250 (about US$125) per person a day sharing a room, about Bds$600 mid-range and about Bds$1,440 for comfort. The cheap side is excellent: flat-fare buses, rum shops and the Oistins fish fry.

Where the money goes
Accommodation dominates: even south-coast guesthouses cost Bds$200-350 a night, the Gap and Holetown Bds$400-900, and the Platinum Coast far more. Restaurants with sea views and imported wine are priced for visitors, while tours such as catamaran cruises, Harrison's Cave and St Nicholas Abbey cost Bds$70-160 each. Transport is cheap if you use buses and expensive if you rely on taxis or a hire car at Bds$120-180 a day.
When it is cheaper
From mid-April to mid-December rates fall, often by roughly 30-50% at hotels compared with the December-April peak. Crop Over in late July and early August brings a short price rise.
How to spend less
- Use the flat-fare buses and ZR vans (about Bds$3.50) instead of taxis; they cover almost the whole island.
- Stay on the south coast (Hastings, Worthing) rather than the west coast; it is cheaper and on the main bus routes.
- Eat at Oistins, rum shops and lunch spots serving cou-cou and flying fish instead of beachfront restaurants.
- All beaches are public up to the high-water mark, so you can use the beach in front of luxury hotels without paying for a day pass.
- Snorkel Carlisle Bay from Brownes Beach with your own mask instead of joining a boat trip every day.
- Pay in Barbados dollars where possible: change from US dollars usually comes in local money at Bds$2 to US$1.
