Is Cuba expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Cuba is moderately priced for visitors: a budget day is about US$60 per person and a mid-range day about US$125. Prices are low by Caribbean standards in casas particulares and paladares, but most tourist services are priced in US dollars or euros, transport between towns is costly relative to distances, and shortages can push prices up.

Where the money goes
Accommodation in casas particulares is good value, from about US$25–45 a double, and boutique hotels in Old Havana are the main exception at US$150–350. Getting between towns takes a surprising share of the budget: Viazul buses are cheapest but sell out, and colectivos cost US$25–45 a seat. Food in paladares is reasonable, though prices have risen with shortages; casa breakfasts and dinners are good value. Excursions such as classic-car rides, guided horse treks and live-music venues add up.
When it is cheaper
From May to October (outside July–August holidays) casa rates and some tour prices can be lower, often by roughly 10–30%; the peak from mid-December to March is the most expensive.
How to spend less
- Bring clean euro or US dollar cash in small notes; foreign cards are often refused and ATMs unreliable.
- Book Viazul buses online or at the station early, and use colectivos booked through your casa when buses are full.
- Take breakfast and dinner at your casa, which is usually cheaper than paladares and better value.
- Agree taxi and classic-car prices, duration and route before you get in.
- Ask your casa host for the current informal exchange rate before changing money.
- Use bicitaxis and walk in Old Havana instead of taking taxis for short distances.
