Seoul or Taipei? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Taipei for night markets, a relaxed pace, and hot springs and mountains on the metro line, at a mid-range cost a little below Seoul's (about NT$3,950 a day against ₩190,000). Pick Seoul for a bigger, faster city with palaces, nightlife that runs until dawn and stronger shopping, ideally in April, May or October.

Seoul: suits solo travellers and groups of friends who want palaces, shopping and late-night food and bars in a big, fast city.

Taipei: suits backpackers, solo travellers and first-timers to Asia who want superb cheap street food, an easy metro and nature close by.

Common questions

Is Seoul or Taipei cheaper?

Taipei is a little cheaper on our mid-range figures: about NT$3,950 per person per day against about ₩190,000 in Seoul, which works out somewhat higher at recent exchange rates. The biggest difference is food: a night-market dinner or a bowl of beef noodle soup in Taipei costs very little. Hotels vary widely in both, so book central areas early.

What is the weather like in Seoul and Taipei?

Taipei is subtropical: around 18°C in January and about 33°C and humid in July, with typhoons possible from roughly July to September. Seoul has four distinct seasons, near 1°C in January and around 30°C in July. Spring, April to May, and autumn, October to November, are the most comfortable time to visit either city.

Which is easier to get around?

Taipei, slightly. The MRT is clean, cheap and simple, with English signage, and Google Maps gives full directions. Seoul's subway is also excellent and covers more ground, but Google Maps has limited directions in Korea, so install Naver Map or KakaoMap. Both cities have rechargeable transit cards sold at stations and convenience stores.

What day trips can I take from each city?

From Taipei, Jiufen and the Pingxi line, Beitou hot springs and the Maokong gondola are all within an hour or two. From Seoul, popular trips include the DMZ on a guided tour, the Hwaseong fortress in Suwon and Nami Island. Taipei's trips lean towards mountains, tea and hot springs; Seoul's towards history and the border.
