Naples or Seville? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Naples for the best pizza anywhere, a loud, intense old centre and easy access to Pompeii, Vesuvius and the Amalfi Coast. Pick Seville for a more polished, walkable city of Moorish palaces, tapas bars and flamenco, best in spring or autumn; on our numbers it is slightly cheaper, about €165 a day mid-range against €175 in Naples.

Naples: suits backpackers, solo travellers and friends who want street food, raw city energy and day trips to Pompeii and the islands.

Seville: suits couples, photographers and older travellers who want Moorish palaces, tapas, flamenco and an easy, flat city to walk.

Common questions

Is Naples or Seville cheaper?

They are close, with Seville slightly cheaper on our mid-range figures: about €165 per person per day against about €175 in Naples. In practice Naples' street food is exceptionally cheap; a classic margherita at a historic pizzeria costs well under €10. Seville's tapas bars keep meals affordable, while hotel prices in both cities jump around major festivals.

When is the best time to visit?

Seville is best from February to May and in October and November on our data; July averages about 38°C and afternoons are brutal. Naples' best months are June, September and October, with July around 31°C. For a combined trip, aim for spring or October. Seville's Holy Week and April Fair are spectacular but crowded and expensive.

Is Naples safe for visitors?

Most visitors have no problems, but Naples demands more street sense than Seville. Watch for pickpockets on crowded buses, around the central station and Piazza Garibaldi, and keep phones out of reach of passing scooters. Traffic is chaotic, so cross carefully. Areas like the Quartieri Spagnoli are lively and generally fine by day; ask your host about night-time.

What day trips can I take?

From Naples: Pompeii and Herculaneum, Mount Vesuvius, Capri, Procida, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, all reachable by train, ferry or bus. From Seville: Córdoba is about 45 minutes by high-speed train, Cádiz and Jerez are easy by rail, and Ronda and the white towns make a full day by car. Naples has the richer choice.
