Events worth planning around
- Feast of San Gennaro, 19 September, when the faithful wait for the liquefaction of the saint's blood in the Cathedral (also on the Saturday before the first Sunday of May and on 16 December)
- Christmas season on Via San Gregorio Armeno, from late November to early January, with nativity-scene stalls
- Maggio dei Monumenti, in May, when many churches and palaces open with special visits and events
- Easter (March or April), with processions and the traditional pastiera cake in every bakery
When to avoid
Avoid July and August if you plan Pompeii, Capri or the Amalfi Coast: heat and crowds are at their peak, and around Ferragosto (15 August) some city restaurants close. November is the rainiest month.
