Common questions
Is Madrid or Valencia cheaper?
Valencia, slightly. Our mid-range estimate is about €163 per person per day in Valencia against €166 in Madrid, so the difference is small. Valencia's hotels are a little cheaper outside Fallas week in March and the summer beach season. In both cities the set lunch menu is the best-value way to eat well.
How long is the train from Madrid to Valencia?
About 1 h 45 to 2 h on high-speed trains between Madrid and Valencia Joaquín Sorolla station, with several operators and frequent departures. Joaquín Sorolla is a short walk or metro ride from the old town. Driving is around 360 km and takes about 3 h 30, so the train is the better choice.
Is Fallas a good time to visit Valencia?
It depends on what you want. Fallas, in mid-March and peaking 15–19 March, fills the city with huge sculptures, firecrackers and street parties, ending with the burning of the figures. It is unforgettable but very loud and crowded, and hotel prices rise sharply. If you want a calm visit with the beach, choose April–June or September–October instead.
Can you swim in Valencia?
Yes. Malvarrosa and the neighbouring Cabanyal beach are long, wide sandy beaches reached by tram or bus from the centre in about 20–30 minutes. The sea is comfortable for swimming roughly from June to October. Madrid has no beach; the nearest coast is more than 300 km away, so Valencia is the obvious choice for a city-and-beach trip.
